All Living by Michael C. Humphrey

In this speculative tale from author Michael C. Humphrey, Kole, the first son of Adam and Eve, is still alive, and he has decided to tell his friend Lester his life story. The reader is taken 6,000 years into the past as Lester reads Kole's journals about what happened to the descendants of Earth's first couple. The imagery and descriptions of the young planet are so vivid that one almost feels that they are there with Kole as he witnesses the murder of his brother Abel at Cain's hand, walks in the presence of God during his visit to Eden, and so on.
While at first the premise may seem strange (after all, Cain was the first son of Adam and Eve, right?), Humphrey provides a convincing explanation for Kole's existence, and fills in other gaps in Biblical history in a similar manner. It is clear that Humphrey did vast amounts of research when writing All Living to make the distant past as believable as possible.
I won't describe anything else about this book so other readers will be as surprised as I was regarding certain parts of the plot. I would recommend this to fans of Tosca Lee's historical novels and Robert Liparulo's novel The 13th Tribe.
