Dreamless - Jason and Claire's Relationship

Alright. So I just finished reading Dreamless and one of the most annoying things about this book (IMO), were Jason and Claire. Don't get me wrong friends, I really really enjoyed Starcrossed and Dreamless! Dreamless even more!
First off, I want to warn you guys that this is a bit of a rant. :) If you don't see things this way, that's totally fine and I'm probably just off my rocker, but it really made me mad, for some reason or another.
Back on topic.
I think their relationship is EXTREMELY unhealthy, annoying, and overall maddening.
First off, they fight constantly, break up constantly, yell and demand things of each other constantly, and keep things from each other constantly. Maybe it's because neither of them knew if they were technically dating, which again in itself was annoying.
BEYOND EVEN THAT, when Helen was in OBVIOUS need of her best friend, Claire was too eager to ditch her to hang out with her MAYBE boyfriend.
Jason seemed to show little to no respect for Claire, even though he seen her as this strong, cute little fragile flower, he kept things from her. She showed she was smart and determined (sometimes) to help her friend, but Jason treats her like a CHILD. I get it. She's mortal, he isn't. It's supposed to show some sort of forbidden, delicate, cherished, love, where he realizes her life is precious and wants to take care of her. But this wasn't it! It was possessive and neurotic.
The worst part I can remember this relationship making me PO'd was after Helen took Claire on a little floaty flying trip to show her BEST FRIEND SINCE LIFE, a little bit of Helen's abilities to share what she's going through, and Jason freaked the shit out and eventually Claire told Helen that Jason FORBADE Claire to go flying with Helen again, and Helen apologized and said that SHE'D talk to Jason! He's your (maybe) BOYFRIEND, not your dad! Your MBF can't demand you not do what you want with your best friend. And your best friend shouldn't be an enabler taking blame for trying to include you in her world. She's always careful with Claire and super thoughtful of her. C'mon. It's not like Helen and Lucas were trying to play pass with Claire's body up in the clouds, or seeing how many volts Claire's body can take before her hair streaks like Rogue from X-Men.
Then, being the crazed, protective MBF he is, starts to hate on Helen because Helen''s... dangerous? Really? He should have a little respect for the girl he love's friend. And Claire doesn't say anything about Jason acting like a jerk to Helen. Just ignores it. And Helen lets it slide, too. They ALLOW him to act like a total overbearing, disrespectful jerk for no reason! He should respect Claire no matter which decisions she makes, but be there to support her the whole way through, even if he doesn't agree with her. He's driving a wedge between two best friends! YOKO!
*PHEW* Sorry about that... had to get it off my chest.
Anyone else feel this way about their "relationship"? It could just be me. :) Regardless, I'm adding this rant to my review of the book. I feel the need to spread the word against young, angsty, emotionally abusive relationships!
Again, sorry for the rant...

He clearly has mummy and mortality issues. I'M NOT DEFENDING HIM, before you say. I ABSOLUTELY agree with what you're saying.
He wasn't being protective and supportive, he was being secretive and possessive. Not good things for a healthy relationship. I think he may have freaked out, first love and all and with Claire being mortal. Yes, she fiesty and smart and determined and strong in her own way, but lets face it, being a good book worm isn't going to hold up against another scion or worse.
I think his actions steem from fear - fear of losing her like he (and his father) lost his mother and he's letting it get the best of him. He needs to sort it out.
I think Claire was aware of this, private convosations that we might not have been privy to, so as an audience we can't see where Claire is coming from. Yes, she needs to stand up to him and not let him dictate her, but she loves him and understands he has the best intentions, even if he's going about it all wrong.
I think his problem with Helen is that he can see she is deteriorating mentally and he's worried Claire will end up hurt, physically as well as emotionally. So he probably wants to put distance between them, though obviously this is not his decision and we know Claire will support her friend as best as she can.

I think they're supposed to reflect Lucas and Helen in Starcrossed to show just how far they've come and how everything has changed. I think it leaves room for a spin-off novel about their relationship, even if it's just a novella, I'd read it.
OMFG! YOU JUST COMPLETLY SPOKE MY MIND!!! I mean seriously what the F was up with him? he was so nice and sweet and understanding in the first book but out of freakin nowhere he just started hating like a total egotistical jerk and acted as if he owned Claire. i mean come on i thought Claire was way smarter than that and would actually stand up for herself no matter how much she just "loves"(?) him. but she just stood there and took it. But that wasn't what pissed me off the most.... What pissed me off the most was when he started off on Helen like he hated her more than anything in the world GOSH! it was so freakin annoying and i'm so happy that i'm not the only one who feels this way psssshhhhhh okay *breathe*.... lol you would think i was screaming this but i was actually whispering the whole time X)
I'm so glad you mentioned this. I was annoyed by the flying incident with Helen, but I let most of it go, because compared to other popular YA couples they were relatively tame. (Which isn't necessarily a good thing.)
Personally, the lead couple in one series I was reading became so unhealthy I lost all motivation to finish the series. Maybe, that'll change one day.
I realized I was use to these relationship dynamics in YA literature and overlooking them, so I'm glad you pointed them out.

OMG I THOUGHT THE SAME THING!!! I THINK I WAS THE MOST MAD AT JASON!!(sorry just noticed I still have caps lol) it's just he pissed me off. Like he seriously was a pain in the ass! He kept on yelling at Helen like she was doing stuff wrong. And he was like Helen everything isnt about you. And Helen your being selfish. I'm like REALLY!??!? THIS GIRL HAS BEEN THROWN INTO THIS F'D UP SITUATION and IS LOSING WEIGHT AND LOOKS LIKE CRAP. AND SHE JUST FOUND OUT THE PERSON SHE LOVES IS HER COUSIN AND SHE IS BLEEDING BY THE NOSE. DO YOU REALLY THINK SHE WATS TO BE IN THIS SITUATION?!? Do you really think she cares about your POINTLESS relationship with claire right now?!? NO SHE DOESNT. Why don't you and claire be supported and try to STOP A WAR instead of dealing with your childish relationship. idiot.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this series, and all the characters.... I think all the relationships are super cute <3
But Jason was bang out of order byu forbidding Helen from Flying with Claire!!!!!!
HOWEVER!!!!!
If you look carefully in the books , I think Ariadne or Cassandra say to Helen that patterns have repeated , and one is that too girls who are like sisters , will fall for two guys who are like brothers, and will cause destruction... Everyone proabably assumed that the couple to cause destruction are Helen adn Lucas, not being togteher..
BUT it could be Claire and Jason breaking up..... ????

Okay i want to add a bit to that rant.. :D (although u basically said everything i wanted to say)
and Helen is basically going to hell every single day to help your family get Hector back and you act like she is the bad guy. I mean SHE IS HELPING YOU!! She just needs some support and your taking away all she's got from her. Why on Earth would she do anything that would endanger her best friend. P.s Jason she has known her longer.. so she probably cares a lot more than you give her credit for.
In the end.. i hated Jason in this book.

i agree with what you all are saying, jason was a jerk and during parts of the book i found myself hating both him and claire. it seemed out of character for claire to do what jason wanted i mean COME ON, i feel like that fiesty-dont-you-mess-with-me-uless-you-want-me-to-mess-you-up chick was gone, hiding behind her uber protective boyfriend. yeah yeah i get that she human and you need to keep her safe but that doesnt mean he has the right to order her around like he did.
i feel like things were not as complicated between them when they wernt BF & GF. i miss the old claire and jason. i hope jason isnt such a jerk in the next one, and that claire pulls her crap together.

I am so glad I was not the only one that thought this. It seemed like everything he did would make me mad, and the part that made me really dislike him was also the part that Helen took her in the air, not even really flying, they floated, what like 10 ft? Agreed that Jason is an Idiot!
Haha. Everyone thinks the same thing.
The worst part is obviously the flying thing but also how he's driving Helen and Claire apart.
I got most annoyed when he called her selfish.
I was like "SHE'S DYING YOU IDIOT!"
He didn't think about that did he?
Apart from that I can't wait for the next book!!!!

I completely agree with you!! I thought he behaved like an absolute jerk throughout the book and EVERYONE tolerated it which was very strange. And it was strange even while I was reading, how no one was concerned about Helen. C'mon, she was losing wight and looked like she hadn't slept in forever and nobody thought to help her for the majority of the book. Claire, for most of the book was an absentee friend even bailing on Helen to be with Jason. Most people behaved like jerks towards Helen (with the exception of Hector and Orion!)

I agree with you all!! Jason was definitely one of my favourite characters in the first book but in the second he drives me crazy the flying thing is definitely most annoying I get that he cares about Claire's safety but seriously if Claire were ever in any real danger Helen would be the first to save her. Also this possessive protective Jason is out of character for him as much as Claire not standing up for herself is out of character for her like in the first book Jason was so nice to everyone even eventually Claire then in dreamless It's like he's a different character I think this might have been intended though all will probably be cleared up in the third book my opinion of Jason is weird there's just something about him I have to like I don't know why or what I just like him I don't like the way he acts or how he treats Claire but its like an attraction or something where I just have to like him. I loved these books so much I didn't love Jason in the second one but I still adored the books as a whole!! :)
