What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

First read it in the mid - late 90's about a girl who used a stick for a wand. there was a boy with a wand made out of the antena of a Lotus (car). happend in a world where the cars were alive, they had mouths.. firehydrants were scary... mabye everything was alive. might have been a book on tape. Thanks for the help.

The girl is Nita, and the boy is Kit.
They travelled to the world with live cars and fire-hydrants, from our own world.
