I just got a new book at the library that I was all excited about, and realized that it would work for this challenge! I'm just going to read it now -- but maybe someone else will want to add it to their list? Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese. The book is set in Northern Ontario, so it belongs on this list. Wagamese happens to live in Kamloops, B.C.
ABE books just sent me an email about women on the frontier, which included recommendations for these books:Sisters in the Wilderness by Charlotte Gray (a renowned biographer living in Ottawa, Ontario) about two women who settled in early "Upper Canada" (what later became Ontario.) Both of the women featured in this biography wrote their own books: The Backwoods of Canada by Catherine Parr Traill and Roughing it in the Bush by Susanna Moodie.
Just found another Ontario novel. This one is called The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan, who happens to be a Goodreads author! It's currently on sale for $4.99 at the Kobo store. Also: At a Loss for Words: A Post-Romantic Novel by Diane Schoemperlen. The novel is epistolary (told in letters) and on sale at Kobo for $2.99!
This is just a guess: Juliet Stories by Carrie Snyder (a goodreads author!) is partially set in Ontario (that's the guess part -- the synopis just says the family moves back to "Canada"... but everyone in Canada is from Toronto ;-p and the author is from Ontario...) and partially set in Nicaragua.
Long Hot Summoning is set mostly set in Kingston, Ontario, in the mall there. I'm halfway through it, and I love it. It's so funny- I was reading it in the checkout aisle at the grocery store and started laughing so hard that I almost cried and the lady in front of me and the cashier were staring at me. I'd recommend it, especially for people who don't have an Ontario book picked out yet and don't mind a little bit of lesbianism. It has two hilarious talking cats who, aside from the bit about them talking, are fairly realistic, according to my mother.

I don't think so.

Vinyl Cafe Unplugged and the other books in the Vinyl Cafe series are set in Tornto. They're supposed to be really funny.
This is a freebie for Kindle in UK as of now http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004DERGVU... Has anyone read it?
I'm readingThe Second Summoning for fun, and is set, I believe, in Ontario. One of the main characters and her boyfriend are traveling around looking to keep evil in check. It's in the same series as a book I have listed in the book-sharing ring, Summon the Keeper. It's very funny. It's definitely sci-fi fantasy.
From my best Canadian reads of 2012 --so my reviews are freshThree Day Road—Joseph Boyden: First Nation youth struggles to recover from World War 1 experience (in agreement with Janice on excellence)
The Wars—Timothy Findley (some settings): An officer finds a path to survival and meaning in World War 1
Factoring Humanity—Robert Sawyer: a Univ. of Toronto couple links their work in quantum computing and deciphering alien communications from Alpha Centuari to accomplish travel to parallel universes
By the Time You Read This—Giles Blunt: outstanding police procedural in rural Ontario
The Tenderness of Wolves—Stef Penney: murder mystery in the rural wilderness of 19th century Ontario (author is English; confirms GateGypsy's recommendation)
I started listening to Anna Dressed in Blood today and was surprised to learn that it is set in Thunder Bay, Ontario. So far, it's a fun read and would be a good choice for those who enjoy young adult.
Jack of Diamonds About half the book is set in Ontario. It also has a small section set in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
