Afterlands To me, this is quintessential historical fiction. It is a fictional retelling of a historical event (the fated Polaris Expedition). It goes one step further and creates a completely fictional ending of what happens to the characters after they were rescued.

I'm adding Karin Lowachee's book The Gaslight Dogs to two northern territories, because technically it is a steampunk novel based on the Inuit but not quite. I know some of us look for books that are slightly different for challenges like this, and this would fall under the speculative fiction category.
White Heat The author is not Canadian, but the book takes place in a modern-day, albeit fictional, village on Ellesmere Island.
I am presently reading Farley Mowat's No Man's River, it is set in northern Manitoba and Nunavut. I am loving it.
