regan The Warmth of Love
By: Regan
Reese looked out his window into the dark storm of England of the Elizabethan Era (1558-1603). It showed exactly how he felt; sad, depressed, and out of place. But that was normal to him. He was alone and that’s all there was to it. Reese had no friends, but that was because he was “strange” according to the others. He didn’t know his mother, and his father was a cruel, rich, self-centered, old man. Truly alone he has been for the last 14 ½ years.
I hate myself, Reese thought. Please. Someone, anyone, just help me. Change me. The kids at school were judging. They criticized just about everything. Thus the reason condemning Reese to the rank of “Strange”. They discerned Reese’s cold self. Ever since Reese could remember, he was cold, numb now though. No heat could warm him, no matter how close he got to the fireplace. No scarf, gloves or socks could keep the tips of his nose, fingers or toes from turning blue. The other kids often called him “toad” for his cold, inhuman skin. They also teased him with crude names like “castle boy” since his father was a nobleman who lived in a castle. For years, Reese told himself that they called him that because they were jealous. It was probably true, but still, it hurt. All those years of neglect had made him cold inside, as cold as a blizzard.
“Reese!” his father boomed up the massive stone stairway. “Your supper is ready!”
“I’m not hungry!” Reese shouted back.
“You will come down here and eat your dinner now!” His father yelled.
“I’ll starve instead!” Reese retorted.
“It’s hard enough being me! It’s even harder when you fight me!” He bellowed. “Now get down here before I throw you out into the frigid cold of thy winter!”
“It’s not like I’d die! Cold can’t touch me!” He yelled back. It was true. All year, Reese wore his summer cloak. There was no need to wear all the extra textiles like his doublet or winter breeches.
“But starvation can!” his father countered. Reese trudged down the steps with a scowl on his face. How dare his father threaten him in such a way! He walked into the vast dining quarters and sat in his seat, across from his father. “Good evening,” his father said stiffly. “Nice of you to join thou.” Reese had no response. It wasn’t very nice to join this nobleman of a father. It was horrid. Margaret, their main servant, brought out silver platters that held their supper. Richard, their other servant, brought out chalices in which held their drinks. “Will mother be attending supper?” Reese asked. This certain question was routine. He’d asked it at every meal they had for the last 14 ½ years of which he could speak. “As I’ve informed thou before, you cast her off with your birth. She had not wanted a child. She feared she had endangered you, and if you hath known her, the knowledge would have cursed us with monsters,” his father said with no enthusiasm. Just another way to say “It’s your falt, son.” Reese thought. “It’s just what your mother had told me before she left,” his father said. Reese knew the real reason she’s gone. Or so he thought. She wasn’t there because when she told his father that the” knowledge of her would curse them with monsters” he accused her of witchcraft and cast her off castle grounds. Simple as that.
Reese finished his supper in silence. His fish plate was decorated with inedible peacock feathers, in which he pushed to the side. His apple-ale was bitter; little was drank. “Father?” Reese asked.
“Yes?” his father replied.
“If mother came back, would you want to see her? Be with her again?”
“No, she left on her own account. She wanted to be gone, so she is no longer welcome on these grounds,” he answered.
The servants brought out a cherry pie for dessert along with warm cider. Reese finish his cider and half his pie. He stood. “May I be excused for the remainder of the night?” he asked. “I suppose,” his father answered, still finishing his pie and cider.
Reese pushed in his chair and left the table. He walked down a hallway leading to the stairs. Beside the stairs, on both sides, were passageways that led to other quarters of the massive castle. Down the corridor to the right, a black hooded character stood. Reese took a slow step forward. “Hello?” He called to the figure. It stood there silently, with no response, as if it was inspecting him. “Who are you?” he called again. This time it answered. “Come to me,” it said with a soft, affectionate voice. He could tell it was feminine. “Tell me who you are or I’ll get my father!” Reese yelled to the female figure. It stood without movement. Reese briskly took five steps down the hallway he came from to appear he was getting his father. He turned back and peeked around the corner to see if the figure was remaining. All he found was two empty passageways. Reese took a deep breath and started up the steps. He found himself constantly checking the steps behind him. Once he got to his sleeping quarters, Reese locked the thick, wooden door with an old red-rusted key. He put the key on his nightstand. After hours of sulking, Reese put on his nightwear and went to sleep.
Reese woke with a start. He felt something on his left side. It was…warmth. He sat up, thrilled to actually feel heat. He put his hands close to his face so he could see in the dark of the night. His left hand was pink with warmth and the right was bluish with cold. He looked to his left to find the source of effective heat. To his horror, Reese found the mysterious figure sitting on his desk chair pulled up next to his bed. He scrambled out of his bed and to the door. He yanked hard, attempting to open it but he locked it. Where did I place my key? he wondered, frantically looking around. He turned his head to see the figure rise to its feet. It stuck out its hand, tempting Reese to place his hand in its warmth. “Reese,” it said softly. “It is time. You’ve been cold so long. Come and embrace thy warmth. Love. Now.” It spoke with a placid gentleness that made him feel the warmth inside of him. Oh how he so wanted to take its hand and be warm forever, but he was unsure of who the cloaked character was. “I am aware you are uncertain of what or who I am. But understand this, you can leave this life. You can be with those ‘like’ you. Be normal. You hath to understand originality. Not all bricks are perfect in a castle. Not all tree be the same height. Before you come to such a place, before you will ever be warm, you must understand this in yourself. I’d tell you my identity, but for me to understand if you are ready, I need you to see. See the warmth inside. Know that nothing is gone forever. That bitter is cold and love is warmth. You were warm once, you haven’t been is so very long. Tomorrow, inside you a light will burn bright. I know.” it finished. With that, the womanly figure dissipated into the winter breeze flowing through the window. Reese loosened his grip on the handle of the door and finally let go of it. What had she meant he wondered. Who was she?
The next morning, Reese got up from his bed and put on his cloak. He bounced down the stone stairway and stopped at the last step. He peeked around the corner to see if the figure was where it had been the first time he’d seen it; the hallway was vacant. He walked to the courtyard where a sundial sat on a podium. He looked at the shadow; 7:12. Breakfast was at 8 so he had time to think about the woman’s words. Was she saying that I am original? I suppose it’s so but what does it hath to do with understanding this in me? And what am I supposed to love, now? What’s there to love? Everything here is horrid. I’ve been warm. Sure don’t remember it. Wait…love is warmth and I’ve been warm? So I’m bitter? And nothing is ever gone forever? Is she referring…my mother? Reese had to find the figure fast. He had to speak with her before breakfast, he couldn’t wait. He ran into the castle and abruptly stopped when he saw it standing there, waiting. “I’m still confused.” Reese told her. “But were you referring to my mother?” He asked. “Yes.” It responded. “Yes. Every word your father has ever told you was true about your mother. You’ve blamed yourself for her leaving. You’ve been mad and bitter at yourself. You don’t love yourself anymore. You’ve lost the fire that is supposed to burn within you. Understand now that it is not your fault.” Reese thought to himself for a moment. Suddenly heat raced through his body, filling him with a happiness that he recognized. The figure bent down so it was eyelevel with him. It pulled off the hat of the cloak and revealed a beautiful woman, smiling. “Reese, I’m your mother. I now you have questions but they must wait. I am unwelcome here.” She said. Reese thought for another moment. He recognized her from his school books. He laughed to himself. “You look like Hestia from my school book!” He exclaimed. “That is because I am,” She responded. “Now you must come with me to Camp Half-Blood. You will be safe there.”
“But what about father?” He asked
“Do not worry. The mist will cover his vision.”
“What’s the mist?” he asked.
“I’ll explain along the way there. But for you to keep this warmth, you need to know that love is the warmest kind of fire. You have to keep it inside you, and love everything that you are.” She smiled. Hestia put out her hand and Reese took hers. With that, they walked from the courtyard, warmth of shielding off the cold.

Emily ~BIG BARDA~ Heaberlin (willyoupleasegiveup) Title: Summer Queen
Author: Emily~Try Defying Gravity~ Heaberlin

I stood at the edge of a rock as water below me swished. The sea salt splashed and lapped along the bottom of the rock, which was easy 20 ft down. I gulped down my fears. No way was I letting Leo beat me, or be braver. I made sure my black locks were tied tight in the ponytail. Made sure my sunscreen was in place on my face. I could hear Leo and my senior friends yelling.
"Jump, Marcy! Coward!"
I backed up from the edge then I jumped. It felt like hours before I hit the chilling waters of Lake Eerie. I came back up, proud smirk on my face while the scar on my forehead gleamed in the light. I swam back to my friend's boat.
There sat Leo with his gold hair, tan skin and freckles, grinning like an idiot. He helped me up in the boat and then laughed. "You were paler than you already are, Marceline!"
I blushed furiously as I punched his arm. "Was Not!" I protested with no avail. I sat down on the grey and white leather seats, even though it burnt my poorly protected butt. Leo wore his old Lifegaurd trunks while I still wore the black t-shirt of my school over my maroon bathing suit.
That's when Leo looked at me. "So, how scared we're you, Mar-Mar?" He asked me with my childhood nickname and I punched him again.
"I wasn't scared you Dil-hole! I'm Marceline Queen! When is the goth chick ever scared?!" I shouldn't have said that.
Leo grinned. "When you went on your first date with Cullen Edwards. When we watched Saw 3. When we went to the haunted house. When your mom screamed surprise at your birthday party." He rattled off more annoying things I didn't want to be reminded of.
"Okay! I get it, Leo! But I wasn't scared, idiot!"
Leo grinned again and threw his arm around my shoulders. "So, Marceline, are you still afraid of telling your parents about us?" Leo muttered into my ear. That's when I turned red and shoved him off the boat.
Leo, you idiot! I slept with you once! And we were drunk! It was nothing! I thought with intense anger.
After that, the day ended with little to no drama among my senior class. Well, except what happened in the woods with Leo and this red-haired girl called Bonnibel. They did awful things. Awful. Awful things. And for some reason I was furious with Leo and Bonnibel.
Well, I got so mad that Bonnibel won't be going home without some driving her. The mean words I could've called her.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Alarm goes off. “Ugh. Time to get up already?? “I said. I look at the alarm clock,” 8:00 p.m. already!!!! I need to get up” I run over to my closet. I pick up this flower pattern romper. I put it on, grab my jacket and backpack. When I ran out of my room I almost ran into Liam Hichcock. My crush. Crap. “ Whoa there Jen! You going somewhere?? “ Liam says. “ Yea. Did you forget about school?? “ I replied. “ Dude it’s the weekend! Hey so me and Diego, Faith, Tessa, and Stefan are going to the pool. Wanna come??” Omg did Liam just invite me to hangout with him?? This is the best day ever, I thought. “ Sure. I haven’t seen Tessa, and Faith.” I said as calm as I could. Tessa and Faith are my best friends. I met Tessa in highschool ( which is now ) and I met Faith in kindergarten. “ Lets go! “ I follow him side by side.
When we get to the pool everyone is already there. Faith looks our way. She sees me standing with Liam, her mouth drops. I mouth ‘ I know right ‘. We hang for a while. When its time to leave Faith runs up at to me” Tell me everything. Did you guys hang??? Did you guys kiss?? Did he ask you out??” And I just start laughing. “ No. I was running out my room because I thought today we had school and I almost ran into him. And he invited me to hang with you guys.” I said still laughing.
When I got back to my room, I opened my room to see my room trashed. Not only is it trashed but a dead body. The smell of blood made me so thirsty. All I could think of at the moment was, scream. “ Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Someone help me. Help.” I screamed. Someone comes but it’s the last person I want to see. Diego. My ex. But he still has a crush on me. But I put that aside and told him what had happended. “ I don’t know how someone could have done this. I mean I was only gone for like 3 hours. And im really scared. What if the person that did this comes back for me. Can you please get me out of here?? The smell of blood is driving me crazy.”
While walking to the Blood Café, Diego was talking nonstop about last night’s soccer game. “ I shot the winning goal. The crowed was cheering for me. When I got off the field they poured blood all over me. It was the best night ever!” exclaimed Diego. And I pretend to be excited for him. I just hate soccer. And Diego knew that. “Wow, that’s amazing!” I said trying to sound amazed. “Im sorry for boring you.” Diego said, while seeing how bored I was. “No, its not that boring.” I said trying to sound convincing. But he just shook his head and looked away. I felt bad but I couldn’t pretend to like something I really didn’t like.
When we got there, there was a 20 minute wait. But luckily, the humans were working today.” Wait here. Ill get us a table.” I said with a smirk. I walked to one of the waitors,” excuse me miss,” with my sweetest voice.” Can I help you.” I stare into her eyes, when they got huge,” you will get me and Diego a table now.” She nods. When I walked back to Diego, his glares was getting on my nerves.” What did I do now??” I asked. I mean I got us a table.” You know your not allowed to us compulsion. Like im not allowed to use mind reading.” I hated when he was right. Stupid school rules. No using any powers.

The next day, I woke up to 20 text messages. God, I thought. Who are these from. It was from the twins. My other best friends. They invited me to have lunch. I replied yes. I got dressed. 30 minutes later im leaving my room. When I got out I see everyone running to the loft. I asked one of my friends that was running with everyone.” Hey Luna. Whats going on???” “You haven’t heard?? Well apparently there was a dead body in the loft. When a someone was walking in there this morning they saw it.” Wow I thought. Images from yesterday flew into my head.” Ok. Lets go check it out.”
When we got to the loft, there was a huge crowed. When I finally got to the front of the group, there was a message for someone. And that someone was me. The message wrote, Jen. The monster waits you. You must hide. Meet me for lunch. I could not believe what I was reading here. But I knew in my gut something bad was going to happen to me, if I didn’t meet this person for lunch. But there was a problem. Who was this person??? I was in deep thought when all of a sudden, it was black. I had passed out. The next thing I knew I was in the ER in the school. “What’s going on??” I asked one of the nurses. But she didn’t answer me. When she left the room, a visitor showed up.” You must be Jen” The person said. The way it talked was so soothing. But before I could say something, someone busted into the room and took down the figure. It was so cool I started cheering. When the fighting stop, the person who ran in, introduced herself.” Hello, my name is Rose. I am your mother.” She said.
My mother?? No that can’t be. My mother was dead. All these questions were forming. But I couldn’t ask anyone of them because” I know you have a lot of questions, but there is no time. You need to get out of here. Like right this minute. This person on the ground is just one of your problems.” Rose said in a panicky voice. She picked me up and put me in her car. I was so scared that I couldn’t speak. But when words did come out it was” Where are you taking me????” I said scared.” To a place no one can find you.” Those words scared me even more. Some place that no one can find me. Is she going to hurt me?? Or even worse, is she going to kill me??? I had to put those thoughts out of my head because we pulled up into a driveway. The house was huge. And there were lights on. I had never felt this way, excited yet, so scared

ok so this only what i have writen so far but if you want i can post more

Exactly. The contest was that the stories were supposed to be based on re picture I posted. But since the picture I posted could be interpreted in many ways, this one was pretty open ended.

The Kids From Liverpool
By Shahdia *******

(Just so you know, it's set when England was the height of Western civilisation.)

We hurried along, me and Alice holding up our skirts so as to not wade through the sloshy waters. It was in things like this that I envied Oliver, who could just run. I and Alice could not run without attracting attention. It was our first quest, but we still had to act professional. All we had to do, Lupa said, was find some lost jewels that belong to Camp Jupiter. No big task. Yeah, right.

Alice heard them first. The crackling of leaves could be heard by anyone with sharp ears. Obviously not me or Oliver, then. "Hush," she hissed. "Could be a monster." Oliver scoffed. I mean, we're demigods. We fight monsters every day. "Hush," whispered ever-urgent Alice. Easy for her to say. I mean, her mother's Angernona, goddess of silence.

Oliver whipped his sword out as we hurried down Covent Garden. We followed the sound of footsteps splashing through puddles as far as Drury Lane. That was when we saw dark shadows seeking for cover behind the Theatre Royal. Oliver brandished his sword as he hopped along. Typical son of Mars. "Don't," whispered Alice. "They could be mortals!"

Oliver laughed. "If they are mortals, they wouldn't be able to see through the Mist, would they?" Neither of us (sensible) girls pointed out that there were clear-sighted mortals. But we still dragged our feet across the gutter.

We saw the shapes come into focus as we realised it was some kids, no older than ourselves, crouching behind. One pointed to Oliver's sword. Oliver cursed and sheathed it. "So," I said nervously. "You guys are demigods, too?" Slowly but surely, the middle one nodded.

"I'm Emily, daughter of Tyche-" she began, before she was broken off by myself.

"Tyche!" I yelped. "But she's Greek!"

"Mary!" reproached Alice. Realisation dawned on us as we figured out that there were Greek half-bloods too. Well, Oliver didn't. Children of Mars are all the same; blunt, stupid and killing machines. "Oliver," said Alice. "There are Greek demigods."

"Pardon!" spluttered Oliver. We all-including the Greeks-laughed. Emily shook her head.

"Anyway, I'm a daughter of Tyche, that is Cat, daughter of Hephaestus, and that's Billy, son of Hecate," introduced Emily. In our heads, we all mentally said "Fortuna, Vulcan, Trivia."

"Why did Lupa not tell us there were Greek half-bloods?" said Oliver in a hushed whisper. Cat laughed.

"Because we'd try to kill each other! That's why we're on opposite ends of the country! We're from Liverpool, you?"

"Portsmouth," I said numbly. We couldn't go to Liverpool! Maybe this was why!

"Well, we should agree never to mention this to anyone, agreed?" said Alice. We all nodded and went our separate paths.

Ghosts Can Be Trapped

The ghost girl floated over the branches of the weeping willow, marvelling how she could have stayed secret for so long; since the Battle of the Labyrinth; she'd died by Zeus' Fist. Then again, the empty-headed wood nymphs didn't notice a thing; too busy gossiping with their friends.

The ghost girl had once been Destiny Redd, daughter of Apollo, so we'll call her Destiny from now on. She had died but for some reason came back to life. How, she had no idea. When she realised she had came back a ghost, she returned to the shadows of the trees and was never seen again. No-one knew what had happened to her-Nico didn't feel her death, anyway-until now.

So Destiny flew upwards, awestruck at how the air resistance just floated through her, when she halted. She stared at the object she had just discovered, pushing down the urge to try and touch it.

Hanging on a branch was an empty birdcage. Destiny frowned, her eyebrows creasing; she'd never seen the cage before. Then again, she'd never been this high before either, so there was no way to know how long the cage had been hanging on the willow.

Destiny decided to satisfy her curiosity about the cage and edge slowly forward. She stopped the ideas of what horrid things could happen by the thought I'm a ghost. They can't hurt ghosts. Or so she thought...

When Destiny placed her translucent hand on the cage she stared. Colour seeped back into it as she reached in. Suddenly, there was a snap as a trapdoor closed on the hand. Destiny screamed and began pulling it out at the exact moment Chiron heard a girl's shriek.

Destiny disappeared into vapour and re-materialised in the cage, squashing herself between the spikes. She knew now that this was no birdcage, but a deadly cage ready to trap-and instantly kill-whatever touched it. Destiny curled up to die, and this time the soul reached the River Styx and didn't come back.

Chiron and a couple of campers arrived at the clearing, fearing that the worst had happened and a camper had been killed. They found nothing. Nothing but an empty, innocent-looking birdcage lying on the floor. The curse was lifted-the cage had done its job. The job was to kill the soul that had escaped for so long.
