Danie (heyydanie) Hi all! My name is Danie (:

Alright, so I'm co-hosting a reading challenge where the idea is to read outside of what you normally do. I don't read much romance (of any type) so I figured that would be what I focused on.

So, can anyone recommend somewhere to start? Either series or standalone. Doesn't matter what level of romance, from tame to erotic.

Thank youuu!

Chris Torretta (ctorretta) I'd say Sherrilyn Kenyon. She's not tooo over the top but it's still quite fun, if you like paranormal that is. She does have quite the dark hunter series but you can pick up any book without reading them in order and they make sense. YAY!

Danie (heyydanie) Oh, she's actually doing a signing near me that I was planning on going to. Yay, thanks!

Chris Torretta (ctorretta) Ohhh! She's definitely one of my favorite authors. I hope you enjoy her writing. Very easy and super fun!

Jane (PS) | 24835 comments Where to start? There are a lot of good romance books out there, but it really depends on what interests you...

As a starter, here are some of my favourite (more mainstream) authors (excluding S Kenyon as Novareylin has already mentioned her):

Sci-fi/futuristic - Linnea Sinclair Jayne Castle

Paranormal Rom (PNR) - Patricia Briggs Nalini Singh Christine Feehan Thea Harrison J.R. Ward

Fantasy - Karen Marie Moning Robin D. Owens

Romantic suspense: Christine Feehan Jayne Ann Krentz

Historical - Georgette Heyer Karen Marie Moning Sarah MacLean

Steampunk - Gail Carriger Meljean Brook

Contemporary - Molly Harper

There is a lot of cross-over between genres, eg some rom-suspense may have PNR elements etc... and some of these authors do more than the genre I have placed them in :)

Jane (PS) | 24835 comments A PNR mystery? Hmmm - I must have read some! Let me go see :)

Here is a widely different range of options that I've read - all 4 or 5 stars IMHO :) Perhaps they are strictly mystery but they all have to work out what is going on...

You could try the Jayne Ann Krentz's Second Sight or White Lies - these are the first and second books in the Arcane Society series.

The Eyre Affair is a lovely fun book - mystery mixed with alternate reality.

Dragon Bound is VERY PNR, but perhaps more action than mystery?

Soulless is historical PNR steampunk - obscure and humourous.

Darkfever - PNR/fantasy but with a definite mystery. Great series made up of five installments.

The Lightning Thief for some YA mystery...

Shield's Lady - Alternate world mystery.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 366 comments PNR/mysteries that are stand alones: Crystal Gardens (Ladies of Lantern Street, #1) by Amanda Quick historical and Copper Beach (Dark Legacy, #1) by Jayne Ann Krentz contemporary
Another contemporary PNR/suspense that I enjoyed is Water Bound by Christine Feehan . All of these involve people with varying psychic abilities, no shifters or vampires.
