And there's an author that apparently (according to the two members who inspired this thread) writes stories about the Maori nation in NZ...Maurice Shadbolt
Chris, For some reason I didn't remember you were a Kiwi. Or never noticed?? One or the other. :-)
I lived in Auckland for a while. Hill Park near Manurewa. I was on a working holiday many years gone. Waitressed at the Denny's that is on the hill ooposite Rainbow's End and sort of opposite Manukau City Shopping Centre. :-)
Terri Actually I don't think it ever came up. I lived in Auckland for about 14 years now, but was originally from Nelson. My wife, teenage kids and I live in Mangere Bridge. What part of Australia do you live in? My wife and I lived in Aus for a few months on our OE many years ago. We were based in Penrith, but did some house sitting in the Blue Mountains as well.
Has anyone else read Rangatira by Paula Morris? A very good story about a group of Maori, most of whom were Ragatira(chiefs) who visited England in the second half of the 19th century. I don't think she has captured the voice of her elderly Rangatira narrator, but the story partly makes up for that.

I have to admit it's probably not my kind of book but the cover is very striking. It reminds me that I should read more about the indigenous people around here too.
I don't often remember to put books in this thread (which is odd as I am Australian), but I have found one to mention here.
Serpent Dust
Looks like a few non-genre specific threads and the WWII thread. Must have been a conversation about the author. It's good to have it in an actual era thread.

This was where Shogun was supposed to go. We had a member who used to act really random. one day he left GR and deleted all his comments when he went.
His comments about Shogun were in the Asia thread and vanished when he vanished. :/
Chris, I should have remembered him. Of course that book would be right up his alley. No wonder I couldn't find it. :)

I remember it! Only vaguely of course, as I was very, very young at the time...
Never read the book. Your review makes it sound very appealing; especially since looking at your list of books and ratings you don't pull your punches. Is it really as special as you describe it?
It's impossible for me to say what my favorite book of all time is, but if I were forced to, Shōgun would definitely be in the mix.
Stuart wrote: "I think you'd enjoy it Andrew. It's a fairly hefty read at over 800 pages, but I'd say "Shogun" is in my top 10 best ever reads. Not that it counts for much haha."I think I probably would enjoy it, and I'm sure I will get there eventually. The only problem at present is time; I've got three books waiting to be read, and haven't even started them because I barely have time to breathe...It's very frustrating.

This period is one period I think that will fit in with the Colonising history of Pacific countries. Most countries in the Asia Pacific were being colonised by the French, Portuguese, Dutch and English in this time period.
However, please feel free to add and chat about books with a PRE 1500's setting also.
Eg Maori's before their country was colonised by Europeans.
For those unsure of which countries fall under the Pacific mantel, here is a list of Asia-Pacific countries.....only ignore the Asia countries as Asia already has a thread.
