I suppose I ought to put my own answer here... :-)
For starters, I've always had a lot of empathy with animals, liked them as a kid, was always very upset when one was hurt. When I hit 13, I realized one day what a hypocrit I was, eating hamburgers and steak one moment, while looking at animals the next thinking friendly thoughts. So, I stopped eating animals. It's purely a decision based on my personal ethics, although as time has gone by I have become aware of other benefits. Bonus!

It's smart to approach it gradually. Folks who jump right in (unless they were motivated by something horrifying) often have "relapses" later. Good luck with eating more plants and less animals! Feel free to swing by and ask questions if you ever have any.
I think that animals have a right to life and I would like my food to be suffering free (as in eggs dairy or chocolate) I find it acceptable to eat these things (eggs dairy and chocolate) as long I can SEE that the animal didn't suffer or know for sure there isn't any child slavery involved)
So many reasons to be.But the greatest one is the conscience I acquired that I don't need to feed on someone's suffering to have a healthy life of my own.
As soon as I realized that, I stopped consuming animals altogether in a week. Fortunately it went smooth :)
