A small girl walked down the street, a hand up before her face, moving as if controlling an invisible touch-screen. A person brushed past her, and she cringed at the contact. Pulling her hands in closer to her body, she slipped between the rest of the people on the sidewalk, finding herself at a large park as she broke out of the crowd. She looked around nervously before slipping into green area, free of the nuisance of others. Quickly, she found an empty wooden bench and sat down, pulling her knees up to her chest and returning to her own little world.
Serena sighed, clicking her tongue as she groped around her room. Today was her traditional "walking" day, when she went outside of the house and actually did things. Her parents had recently been concerned with how little she left her room, so they decided that the best thing they could do for her is shove her out of the house for four hours and not let her back in."Honey? Did you remember to pack your cell phone?"
"Yes, mom!" Serena replied as sweetly as she could. They didn't know about her burning resentment to being treated like a child. Nor would they ever. If they knew she thought like a delinquent, they would just ship her off somehow. It was already enough of a burden that she was blind. Anything else would snap them right in half.
Serena clicked her tongue again, the image she received not a pleasing one. Mom went through my stuff again... She noted unhappily, walking to the other side of her small room to re-adjust Mr. Higgins, her favorite stuffed bear. The entire top of the shelf was a wreck. Even if she WAS completely blind, if she had been wanting to pick up her braille notebook or cuddle with her stuffed bear, she would have known something was off.
"Alright! I'm coming downstairs!" Serena shouted warning to her parents, taking her cane and sunglasses off the door handle as she slung her backpack over her shoulder.
Derek Johanson left his home in the upstate part of the city and headed downtown for lunch. He had nothing on his person aside from his clothing and a cellphone, but that was all he might need. He whistled as he walked, his hands stuck in the pockets of his designer jacket. It was a nice day out, he'd probably spend most of it outside wandering around, or maybe he'd go to a class today.
Serena made her way down the stairs successfully, her hands an inch or two in front of her to make sure she wouldn't bump into things unintentionally. Her footsteps gave her a visual of the things around her feet, however, so she wasn't very worried."Oh, honey, there you are." Serena heard her mother's voice long before she arrived in the kitchen. A fake smile worked it's way to the girl's lips, holding her arms open as her mother inevitably embraced her daughter. "You be careful now, alright? Your father and I are still worried about you." Her mother's nagging fell on deaf ears as the girl stood straight, allowing the woman to fuss over her. "Alright, mom. You know I'm not still 13, right?" A teasing tone covered up Serena's irritation. "Yes, yes, but you're still my little baby. Hurry along now. Enjoy the sounds of nature." And with that, Serena's mother pushed the girl out of the house.
Untying the knot of string that kept her cane's parts together, she expertly assembled it and placed the tip on the ground, sighing a bit. I just want to sleep... She thought, putting her sunglasses on as well as she made her way to the bus stop.
"Perfect Oliver! Great height on the dismount!" His coach cheered loudly in his Russian accent and patted said boy on the back. Oliver just shrugged and nodded, not really listening to the coach's praises. He was already heading to pick up his bag and throw his jacket on. One of the other gymnasts ran up to him."Hey nice dismount, Oliver!"
"Huh? Oh, thanks Ryan."
"Are you going to Jordan's party tonight? I heard it is gonna be awesome! Plus all the Sorority chicks are going. You can't NOT be going!"
"I'll have to think about it. I was kind of planning doing something else tonight."
"And what's that? What could possibly be more exciting than this?"
"It's not more exciting. I just was going to try that new grill downtown and then head home to finish the reading assignment."
"Dude. Sometimes you are so weird." He shook his head and laughed. Well if you spontaneously feel like being social and partying later tonight. You should head over."
"Alright." He shrugged and left. He was like that a lot. Sociable and fun one day and then just not the next. Sometimes he was the life of the party and others he just didn't care enough. Like today. He wanted a burger and there was a new grill that opened up. His essay was due tomorrow so he would probably stay up all night watching reruns of an old television show and then make up some excuse to the professor tomorrow.
Now it was lunch time, so he dropped off his bag at his dorm and decided to take a jog to the deli downtown for a sandwich.
