How Do I? and What, Where, Why?

Nook vs. Kindle
I'm a Nook-y because of the library, ease of trading with friends and I had a Sony (tons of epubs). So I have the option of getting my books either place & at books a million as well. the books seem to be a little more expensive at B&N than Amazon, but I love having a choice. Any excuse to shop.
When I was looking around for an ereader, I chose the Kindle because it was the only one available internationally. Now there are many other stores that offer books to international users and I can get them on my iPad apps. Unfortunately, Barnes & Noble are still limiting their ebooks to US only customers so I don't think I will ever get a Nook.
You can now borrow kindle books from the library - which is one main advantage that the Nook was originally touting over the kindleIt is true for new releases you are limited to amazon - but probably close to 50% of the stuff on my kindle comes from non-amazon sources - fictionwise, all romance ebooks, specific publishers - many of whom now offer downloads in multiple formats so if you do change your reader, you can still access your books
IRT borrowing - you can only loan a book once and then only if the publisher agrees - IIRC it is only something like 30% of books fall within that category - so if you are using that as a choosing basis that is something to consider.
I don't know about Nooks, but on kindle you can have multiple devices registered to one account and any one of those devices can access all the books, which is how most family members deal with reading the same book by multiple people
I got a Kindle mostly because of Amazon - they have a lot more sales/freebies so I had been accumulating tons of ebooks over the years. But I don't think there's that much of a difference between the two devices so if a lot of people you know already have Nooks, it makes sense that you'd get one of those.
I love my Nook. I had the original one, then upgraded to the Nook tablet. It lets me read, use the Internet, play games...apparently I could do Hulu if I paid for Hulu plus. It's an entertainment system all in itself:)I will give credit to the Kindle for all the Amazon freebies. The Kindle app on my iPhone doesn't qualify for 90% of the free stuff. B&N does about 1/4 of what AMazon does in free reads.
I chose a Kindle because I have an Amazon credit card and used my points to get it free. Not just for that but because they have a lot more freebies on the Kindle. And not just a bunch of crap either. So far 15 of my print TBR books and several of my paperbackswap wish list books have popped up as freebies for the Kindle. Generally if I have to pay more than $5 for a book I get it in print if I can so I can trade it afterwards. Unless it's lendable. I use Lendle.me to lend/borrow ebooks. But most books by the big publishing houses are not-lendable. (and over priced in ebook format IMHO)I frequently check the Nook freebie offerings and rarely see anything that Amazon doesn't also have a freebie and the list is much shorter. I put a Nook app on my IPOD but haven't downloaded many.
Christine US wrote: "The Kindle app on my iPhone doesn't qualify for 90% of the free stuff. B&N does about 1/4 of what AMazon does in free reads. "What do you mean, Christine? I've always been able to get Kindle freebies on all my apps.
I'm on my 2nd Kindle and I love it. Originally, I was going to go with a Nook, but the Kindle just felt better to me. Also, you can't beat Amazon's customer service. You can return an ebook in 7 days if you haven't read it (B&N you can't), and Amazon will replace your Kindle in the first year if it breaks, without buying an extra warranty. My advice is to go to a store that has both and just play around with them.
I went with the Kindle Fire for 2 main reasons, other apps and cheaper. While reading is the main point of having it, I also have apps for audible and overdrive so I can listen to books when I don't have time to sit and read. I also have several educational games on it for my kiddos.
When I was researching I only compared the kindle fire and the nook tablet because I wanted the extra features. I am admittely a cheapskate. The fire originally cost less. Kindle looks to have more feebie offers. I also use swagbucks as my search engine which gives me points toward earning free amazon gift cards. I typically earn $5 per month. When I bought my kindle they didn't ofer B&N gift cards, they do now but for more points than the amazon card.
I bought a 1st edition Nook when they first came out because I was already a B&N member (discounts!!) and I really just wanted to try out reading books on a machine. I've had this Nook for about 2 1/2 years and I loved it. Now it's old and broken (has a huge white patch blocking the screen...apparently they're not supposed to last very long). I loved my Nook and just purchased my Nook Tablet and I am so excited! I never really understood the Kindle and find Amazon to be less convenient and unorganized. I love going to Barnes and Noble stores and just sitting at home to buy books. I guess it's just a feeling or a taste. Chocolate or vanilla? Nook or Kindle? Vanilla and a Nook for me. Either way, people have good and bad experiences with both and of course people love both. Just go with what you want and don't focus on reviews too much. Either way, you get sweet deals and a new window to fabulous adventures! :) TEAM NOOK!!!!
I have both a Nook AND a Kindle and I'll say--the Nook is easier to use. Mine is one of the old Nooks also, and despite the fact that it has a small smudge down at the bottom of the screen, its still perfectly legible. I've had it about 3 years now.I find that I have a harder time getting the Kindle to let me re-do sizes, how I search my books and even sorting.
Having said all that--I do admit that Amazon has a LOT more freebies than B&N, so I tend to go in and get them. And I too don't understand why Christine US has troubles with getting the freebies on the different apps she has. I haven't had any probs like that with my phone, computer, etc.
I bought the 1st edition Nook when it came out. I loved it so much that I upgraded to the Nook Color.I prefer it because of the expandable memory option it offers with use of a micro-SD card.
***Update: My hubby bought me the Nook HD for Christmas. ***
Hmm. I find using my Kindle very easy. It super easy to adjust font size and resort books. I have a Nook and Kindle App on my IPOD Touch. I dont' know why but the Nook requires internet access to use. The Kindle App works w/o wifi and so I can just read on my IPOD if I don't want to carry my Kindle around when out shopping. (I have a friend and a kid that both take forever to try on clothes).
Anyway: the only freebies that I can't get on the Kindle app are the prime lending libery borrows. You have to have an actual Kindle device for those as well as Prime membership. Even my library borrows show up automatically on my Kindle app. In fact I have to manually delete them even after they expire.
I have a Nook tablet and love it. I can read for free for up to 2 hours while sitting in their cafe. Since I live 3 minutes from the store I get plenty of free reads. I also check out quite a few books from the library. Like Theresa, the SD-card allows me a ton of room to store files. Every Saturday morning, at my location, there are free classes....so for those that might be intimidated by the idea of moving into e-books they make it pretty easy. I will admitted that I mainly use it to feed my addiction for books....at weee hours in the morning when I MUST get the next book in a series it is a very quick click and my purchase is there. However, for me it is always worth every cent!
Reading is my passion and the conveniences of any e-reader was a no brain-er for me....it just so happens the Nook best filled the bill for me. I hope that helps others.
If anyone has any good info on the HD tablet Nook that will be released Nov 1 ,PLEASE share!
I got a nook simple touch as an early Christmas gift last November from my dad, I love it. And have over 700 books on it. Now I am running into memory issues (700 books) and I have a DROID4 phone on it I have the nook app,the kindle app and the kobo app, so that being said what I am going to do in January is get a Google nexes7 32 gig memory and have all my reading devices in one.
I have a Nook simple touch, a nook color, a couple of iPods, and an Android smart phone. The space issue is not a big thing as books are put onto a micro-SD card. So space is never an issue. The ability to hit e-mail and web pages on the color is nice. However it is about the same on a Kindle Fire. I guess it is about what you learned on the first time. I guess it is whatver works for you.
UM, (looking a bit embarrassed) I have both. And am thinking about getting a Tablet for myself so that I can put BOTH apps onto it, and then just have to carry 1 device. And the books on both my Nook and my Kindle are different--so, between the 2 I think that I probably have about 1300 books. Oh--and did I mention the ones that I have stored on my micro-sd card? Another 400 or so of THOSE. . . And what about my "dead tree" (to quote my daughter) books--another 3 or 4 THOUSAND of those too. Um, ok, looking at all that, maybe I have a SLIGHT addiction problem. . . Nah, can't possibly have an addiction to books. I can give them up ANY TIME I want to. Just don't ask me to or the results will NOT be pretty. :oP
I have a Nook Color and my hubby just gave me a Kindle Fire as an early Xmas present. I love my Nook but I've noticed that Amazon seems to do much more ebook wise. They have alot more freebies, baragin ebooks and today (Black Friday) they are even having an ebook sale. I have no plans on giving up my Nook but if the Kindle offers me better prices, looks like I'll be buying from them too.
Kindle ... biased because of content availability at Amazon more than the reader hardware itself. Some authors only publish through Amazon. Also, Amazon promotes a lot of free download book lists in every genre so it's easy to read a book by an unknown author and if you like them then you can find all the other books they write.
I love my kindle which I inherited from my youngest son when he chose to switch to the Nook. I loved the one I had (the first kindle made) so much my husband just bought me the Kindle Fire HD for Christmas.
I've heard good things about the Kindle Fire, but right now all I want to do is read on it. I guess I'm just a plain kindle kind of a gal...but not a plain gal... :)
I have a Fire and a Keyboard at this point for Kindles. I love cookbooks on the Fire. But I can't read on it as it bothers my eyes. I work on a computer all day so for reading, I need a non-computer screen. If/when my Keyboard goes, I'm going to get a Touch the next time.
I had a Nook Tablet before getting an iPad Mini. Although I love the library and being able to use the store without using a web page, the tablet was very limited. I heard the Kindle Fire is really good and has a better library feature than the Nook.
I have both. I have the Nook tablet and the Kindle 1st gen. Personally it doesn't matter. Nook I love because you have more sites that you can purchase books from in ePub or in PDF. Kindle you can only get it in mobic format.. Yes, amazon has more free books but now you can download kindle app to nook and have best of both world. I don't think you can download B&N app to kindle.. So it all comes down to how much you read. If you read a lot like me (90 so far this year) and don't mind paying for the books then Nook. If you don't read that much but is willing to have a large TBR list then Kindle. Hope this helps.

I have the kindle fire and LOVE it! I have downloaded hundreds of awesome books off of Amazon for free. :) One of my favorite pass times is to shop for free books.
I am on my third kindle I have a fire HD and love it 100%. I think when it comes to comparing them you have to go with what you like. I looked at the pros and cons to both of them and what fit my needs. I am also a girl who loves freebies and I found Amazon had a great selection on freebies. I have to say find what fits your reading needs and go with it. I am sure buy now you have found what you were looking for.
I don't know anything about the Nook at all. I'm an Amazon junkie... we buy everything from Amazon and have been Amazon Prime members for about 4 years now. So, I only ever considered the Kindle. I have the Kindle Fire HD 8.9", the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Paperwhite. I love them all. I keep the Touch at work so I'm not carrying my Kindles back and forth. I read my Paperwhite during the day and early evening and read my Kindle HD at night as I like to read with the black screen and white letters. I have my Kindles set to sync so it goes right to the page I am on no matter what device I use. I also enjoy my Kindle HD for watching movies, listening to music and surfing the web. It feels like a little notebook. I don't like to read with it outside as the glare bothers me. I own 850+ books. I have a list of books that I get notifications when the price drops so I try to save money here and there. And, I feel, the books that I purchase are reasonably priced. I have taken advantage of some freebies and have found some really good books in the process. I take advantage of Amazon Prime's 1 free book to borrow a month. And, I have 3 local digital libraries that I can borrow from and the selection is getting better and better. Some books I borrow from the library are only EPUB books, but I download the Overdrive app to my Kindle HD and I can read them on that device.
I love my Kindles and I love ebooks. There are so many advantages to an e-reader over a book. I rarely, if ever, read a regular book. For example, I was at my library with my kids and I saw some paperbacks on sale for 50 cents.. there were 2 books that I would have loved to have, but when I went to glance through them, I didn't enjoy holding it or the small letters so I passed on the books knowing I wouldn't enjoy reading it.
I have the original Nook and the Nook Tablet and I absolutely LOVE both of them. I love all of the Nook stuff in general. I have never had a problem finding any books and I have about 600 books that I got for free from Barns and Noble. I don't know why people say that B&N doesn't have a lot of freebies. I seriously have so many that were free. I love, love, love my Nook and when it dies from me using it too much, I will buy another one!
The Nook is a great e-reader, but I think it's only a matter of time before Kindle wipes out all the competition.Anybody remember when HD DVD and BluRay were neck and neck competitors? Exactly! :)
I am a original Nook and now a Nook with glow light. BEST e reader. I love the share option. It is small so it can fit right in my purse. I take it everywhere.
I can't get support for Nook in Australia, so as an alternative to Sony (I already have the basic Kindle), I'm looking at Kobo Glo or Kobo Aura. Most of my books are ePub. Any thoughts/feedback?
with B&N separating their ebooks from their B&M in the next few years I'd be concerned going the Nook route...but that it just me
I've read on Nook Color, Kindle app and iBook on my iPad. I also have the Nook app on my iPad. In producing my most recent book which is a contemporary women's fiction with romantic plot I had some trouble at first formatting on Nook. Unfortunately or fortunately, removed it from other platforms in order to do promotions this summer on Kindle as they require exclusivity. Using the free apps is a great option for other devices!!Letting Go: The Maryland Shores (Book One) by Lauren Monroe
My book will be on sale next week July 10th but it's reasonably priced for a 316 page novel. Those from the east coast may truly enjoy and anyone who likes the famous football rivalry of Steelers/Ravens! Could not resist adding that.
I have a Kobo Glo and I'm a little disappointed. At the time, I went for it over the Kindle Paperwhite because it has an SD slot to expand storage but now I regret it. It has a tendency to freeze up and I have to reset it with a paper clip, the reaction time is slow when opening a book and turning pages.
If I had to do it over, I'd go with the Kindle :0(
I don't have any personal experience with Kobo devices, but from what I've read I'd be comfortable purchasing one if I was in the market for an epub reader. If you want some good advice from current users, a thread from MobileRead with some really good head to head comparison info can be found here. Hope that helps some!

Lauren, from what I've read that doesn't sound like the norm for the Glo - maybe you just have a defective one. If you're still within your warrantee period it might be a good idea to contact Kobo and see what they say about it.
i had a similar issue with my original kindle that had the expandable memory - I think in part that is why Amazon got rid of it in later versions
I have a Kobo app (I had 2 Kobo ereaders, but I sadly broke them) and it's fantastic! But I also have the Kindle and Audible apps and love them. I used to love B&N but compared to Amazon prices of their books, I stopped buying things from B&N. I really want to get the Kindle Fire HD someday but I gotta save up.
Thanks everyone! And thanks Lauren and Karen. I'll def head over to that thread you mentioned Karen... My Sony hasn't died yet ( just showing flickering/delays that could signal it's end - I think it could be up to 4 years old). I prefer to read on my Sony over the basic Kindle and I like to support alternate tech to Amazon. (Their market share is so strong!)But I figure if I gave to buy again, I may as well get one with the night light as part of the package. Sony are back in the dark-ages with the light still attached to the cover!
I mostly read on either my iPad mini or one of my Kindles - yes I have two. Two iPads too, but we don't need to go into that...Depends on the circumstances, if glare is an issue I use my Paperwhite. If I'm wanting to do immersion reading, it would be on my Fire. But mostly it is iBooks on my mini - love that! Fortunately, I'm not bothered by reading on an LED screen, I know that can be an issue for some though.
I really enjoy my Nook HD+ and have the Kindle app installed, but rarely use it. I wish the OverDrive app allowed me to use the Nook's reader for my ebook library loans, but it's not that big of a deal. I couldn't bring myself to shell out twice as much for an iPad mini, although I really wanted one. I also like being able to sync my B&N purchases to the "Nook" app for my iPhone. It saves all my bookmarks if I forget the tablet at home. I'm quite pleased with it. I debated for a while between Kindle and Nook, but my selling point turned out to be an odd one. Maybe I'm cheap, but I wasn't pleased about being charged $20 to purchase an "Ad Free" Kindle. It wasn't the amount so much as the whole idea seemed fundamentally wrong to me. I don't regret my choice a bit and my library grows every day!

What are some things y'all like better about each one? I had no idea Kindles were even that popular until I saw about fifty posts only about Kindles. I'm just a little partial to the way Nooks look, though.
