Hey Maggie, I'm assuming with Conan Doyle you're interest is in his historical books like The White Company? I'm coming around to the idea of reading his historical stuff as opposed to contemporary Victoriana (Holmes), just how good are they?Fans of the Phryne Fisher series are always pointed to Jacqueline Winspear so as you haven't mentioned Kerry Greenwood I'll point you in her direction. But I can't imagine you've missed her, at least since that TV show was made.
I haven't read any yet but Jean-François Parot comes highly recommended.
And whilst they're not too cosy Megan Abbott writes incendiary historical crime whilst Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther series is set in and around Nazi Germany and has many high points and Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins sequence is a series of crime novels with a social critique edge set in American starting in 1948 and ending in 1967.
I can't add any to that at the moment, but I have 2 of Kerry Greenwood's books here to read. I haven't read any as yet, and she's been highly recommended, so I'll get there one day:)
I think Eco is a very intelligent writer and I liked how he blended the historical elements with a well crafted mystery

However I have enjoyed her Corrine Chapman series beginning with Earthly Delights. Not so much a crime book as a gentle crime book, and not historical, but fun reading none the less..
I do like the Phryne Fisher books, and CJ Sansom. On the lighter side of historical mysteries I am working my way through Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness series - starts with Her Royal Spyness - I love them.

I've added it to my long long long TBR list!

So glad you're enjoying it Janet...I haven't read it but I know of a few who have, and have really enjoyed it!

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but Clive Cussler has a series out called the Isaac Bell Adventures. Don't let the name fool you, Isaac Bell is a Detective in the early 1900's before the first world war. I've only read one but I found it to be a really good read.
Yes I've enjoyed a number of those Sophie...I haven't read any for awhile though - must read another;)
For anyone who enjoys their mysteries historical try C.S. Harris. Her series about Sebastian StCyr starts with What Angels Fear and it is just brilliant.
The Alienist by Caleb Carr. Hunt for a serial killer in 1890's NYC, before psychology was considered a science. Great characters and setting.

As mentioned in my introduction I enjoy historical novels, including historical crime. A few authors spring to mind, but I'm hoping you can all add a few more to the list:
Anne Perry
Charles Todd
Candace Robb
Paul Doherty
Jacqueline Winspear
Christian Jacq
Daphne du Maurier
Arthur Conan Doyle
Ariana Franklin
Susanna Gregory
Ellis Peters
C.S. Harris
C.J. Sansom
OK that's all I can come up with. Who can add any more, and which were your favourites?
