Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories by M.R. James has the be a good one. All the stories are written in a very tight style and are all chilling, but in such very different ways.

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments I know we have members who have been trying short stories, graphic novels, manga, and such. I thought it might be good to revive this topic to have a place to get recommendations, especially for those interested in trying a new genre.

jaxnsmom | 8339 comments My favorite book of short stories is Animal Crackers by Hannah Tinti. I enjoyed the whole book, but the story Reasonable Terms was my absolute favorite.

What are the pros and cons of a graphic novel?
I've just added my first graphic novel to my tbr - Welcome to the Jungle by Jim Butcher. I admit I added it because of my love of Harry Dresden, I have a huge crush on him :) Has anyone read it? Does this format provide the same satisfaction as a novel?

Janice (jamasc) | 61924 comments I have a few short stories in my tbr lists -

The Jester
The Viscount and the Witch
Clan Rathskeller
A Test of Mettle
Rules for Virgins
The Elephant Vanishes
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
Mitosis
Murder on the Orient Elite
The Cricket on the Hearth'

While some of these may be included in anthologies, most of the copies I have are just the stories themselves.

This reminds me that I want to set up an exclusive shelf for these.

Lanelle | 4166 comments I agree with Judy. O. Henry is the BEST at short stories.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11334 comments I'm not a short stories lover, but I can say I enjoyed Horacio Quiroga (for example The Decapitated Chicken and Other Stories), Jorge Luis Borges's The Book of Sand, and the classic The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio

Mariab | 3030 comments @Sandra.
I love Quiroga too. "Cuentos de la Selva" is the best

Sandra (sanlema) | 11334 comments "Cuentos de la selva" is amazing. 'Las medias de los flamencos' my favorite. My sister and I had an edition with beautiful pictures. I remember reading it at school in third grade. It's weird they are considered short stories for kids, don't you think?
Can't chose a favorite one in "Cuentos de amor, de locura y de muerte". So many good ones there. Probably 'A la deriva' is one I enjoy reading again and again.

Mariab | 3030 comments @Sandra. I was thinking precisely in "Las Medias de los Flamencos" when I wrote that!! Its my favorite too. I read them in the primary school too. And many time I have thought it is a little "harsh" for very young people. But perhaps we tend to 'screen' a little to much the children nowadays. In the past they have heard the tales from Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard and the Grimms brothers - I have always wonder if the english adjective "grim" has to do with them...
I have not mentioned here the non english writers, then I have assumed nobody would make a connection with them. I think in short stories there is awesome ones in spanish (Borges, sure. But also Roa Bastos - "El Trueno entre las Hojas". Ah! and Maupassant too..

Sandra (sanlema) | 11334 comments Actually most of the short stories I have read were written in Spanish. And I'm secretly proud Horacio Quiroga is born in Uruguay like me (he lived most of his life in Argentina, though). Mario Benedetti (another Uruguayan) has interesting short stories too (like "Montevideanos") but I prefer his novels.
Now I read almost everything in English, but some times I missed to read in Spanish.
