Oh, good one, Riona!
I just found a one-book choice, as well:
Tipping The Velvet by Sarah Waters (It's a bit racy, but it's also on the 1001 Books list, and the author uses such lovely language. It might suit readers who like Victoriana and are open-minded.)
Some one book Choices I have found... Though I am still looking for one that catches my eye...The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett
Small Gods by Terry Pratchett
The Lambing Flat by Nerida Newton
Across a Moonlit Sea by Marsha Canham
Through a Dark Mist by Marsha Canham

I didn't even think about checking the Discworld books, because I've read the ones listed here. Small Gods is one of my faves, and I haven't read it in years. Maybe it's time for a re-read! :)
Also from that same series - another one that works:
The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett
Okay, I am done looking... but here are some one book qualifiers I have found. The Friendship Test by Elizabeth Noble
Towers in the Mist by Elizabeth Goudge
The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda
Deception on His Mind by Elizabeth George
Selected Tales by Edgar Allen Poe
XXX by Mel Odom
Shades by Mel Odom
The Sky Is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist by Neil deGrasse Tyson
The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet by Neil deGrasse Tyson
Good Moon Rising by Nancy Garden
Endgame by Nancy Garden
Raven Summer by David Almond
Hahaha, I kinda got caught up in the searching... hope it helps someone out.

Banned From the Tomb by Diana Peterfreund is a super-duper short story (only 1200 words) from Poe's POV... just FYI... (But totally worth reading!!!)
Sara ♥ wrote: "Banned From the Tomb by Diana Peterfreund is a super-duper short story (only 1200 words) from Poe's POV... just FYI... (But totally worth reading!!!)"oh thanks sara, I thought I was keeping an eye on the lengths, but apparently one slipped by.
Just want to verify that authors who go by their first initials will work. I found The Drowned Vault by N.D. Wilson, which should work for the one book option, but I wanted to make sure! Thanks!
