Geel Piet's ability to create a black market within Barberton prison reminds me of the character Red in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. Much like Geel Piet, Red is able to smuggle items into Shawshank that prisoners want to buy and he charges them a price. However, Geel Piet only sells tobacco, sugar, salt, and delivers the letters to the prisoners, while Red is able to obtain all sorts of objects. In both instances, the items that the two characters sell give the prisoners a shred of hope in their dismal world.

I completely agree with this, and I even think that it goes deeper than just the Black Market. Like Red to Andy in the S.R., Geel was a sort of Mentor to Peekay in a way that helped him to adapt and to develop through the story. Past that, there is a similarity between Geel and Red in that they were both released from the prison, but in very different ways. While Red was eventually let out on parole, he clearly didn't want to, and being let out was a sort of death to him in that he didn't know how to function outside of prison, and Geel was strait up murdered.
