I liked the ending. King sowed seeds for it in the revised edition of The Gunslinger. Walter says something like "You never learn. You never will. How many pairs of boots will you wear out on your journey to the Dark Tower?"
It also leaves the door open for King to rewrite the entire series in the future with a different ending.

Yeah ive heard that. but my copy of the gunslinger is a revised one. I would like to get my hands on an old one though.
I loved it too, and didn't see it coming at all.*spoilers*
The famous line "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." was an epic beginning, but also a perfect ending. It made me want to read the whole series all over again.
It's nice to see everyone liked the ending here. I saw lots of people raging over the ending. I think it was just perfect. Ka is a wheel after all, right? The fact that Roland recovered his horn from Cuthbert this time just makes it SUPERB. To be honest, King could just leave the series just the way they are, and I wouldn't mind at all.

When I reread it in my 20's I kinda had that in the back of my mind...I was kinda hoping for a neat little ending with all the answers at the Tower...BUT..I think it was just right now that I'm in my late 30's.
I LOVED the ending. It was the kind of ending that gave me goosebumps and made me want to re-read the entire series again, even though I'd just done it. I only read the books for the first time like 4 or 5 years ago and I haven't actually re-read them all the way through so I'd be interested to read them again and look for little clues like that one mentioned above.
King himself has been noted as saying that he doesn't love the ending itself- but it's the right one. I myself also got goosebumps at the end of it. Like Johnny, "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." was amazing for me.
Perfect.
Perfect.
King had to end it with that line. It was just so iconic for the series and the perfect way to end the book and yet start it all over again.

Same feeling I got!!
I couldn't see that ending coming, but now I just can't imagine it ending differently... seems perfect, Ka wouldn't have it any other way.
I just finished the series. I thought the ending was perfect! Odd and surprising...just as it should have been. And I love that Roland starts his journey anew with the addition of the Horn of Eld. There are always such slight differences in details between worlds throughout the series. The addition of this new element lends to the idea that this is the detail that was missing in his previous quests.
The ending was perfect and it IS the only way it could have ended. How would you wrap up the Tower? It's like understanding the meaning of life and the creator. It's not for humans, nor could they fathom the answers. This we are left with the only ending we could comprehend.I was actually in tears as he called out all the names of those who had fallen and didn't realize it until I saw water marks on the page. It was truly moving and the series itself is what I feel is the most incredible story told.
I wish it could find its way to the screen be it movie or tv based but, it may be tough on me and other readers who hold this series so close to our heart.
Thanks Michelle. If you have the opportunity to pick up the trade paperback of the comic series by Robin Furth and Peter David, you MUST! They add layers to the Tower story that King has approved. Some of those are gut wretching, like the final battle for Jericho Hill. I recommend these to any devoted Tower follower. All things follow the beam.
I read the entire series deployed on an aircraft carrier. Most of the time I was in my rack with the curtains closed. This gave me the chance to immerse myself fully into the story. The ending frustrated me, saddened me, and made me shed tears. The story was not a happy one and could not end any other way. I was upset for a week or so until I met a guy who had also read it a few months before I did. We were eating chow and he looked at me and smiled, saying "the horn of Eld....." This made me happy l knowing that even though Roland is a hardhead, he is slowing learning. I knew he would make it to the end of this loop eventually with the right pieces in place so that his poor soul could finally rest. Love the series. Read it if you haven't, re read it if you have.
The end was appropiated, a happy ending could not be enough and maybe the worst one. I sometimes wonder me why Stephen King sell us that time just can advance forward in the cornerstone world but at the end it crash with the ** SPOILER ** almost infinite loop.
Tommy I know exactly what you mean, I felt the same when I'd finished the final book. It's so great when you meet someone else who understands!
I have to admit, I experienced exactly what Roland did when the door was opened. His despair was mine as well. Having read the entire series back to back, the thought of having to "go through" that again was beyond exhausting...so in a sense, I felt his pain of knowing that he would have to do it all again from the beginning. I liked the ending though; it was sad but Roland having the horn gives me hope.
