The Drudgers are slaves that run the farm and feed the city. At the age of 15, they leave their home packed into a van traveling to a farm outside the city, but within the walls. They are packed into rooms of 10, with only four beds (two bunk beds). There is a hole for a toilet, and the room is bare concrete, which is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. They are fed little, just two small meals of hot soup a day. In between they work in the fields, harvesting in the fall, plating in the spring, weeding and watering in the summer, and caring for greenhouse plants in the winter. They live to about age 30, where they are cleanly disposed of. Many die before then. Sentries make sure they are doing their job and have free reign when it comes to punishment.
