The Tie That Binds is completely knocking me on my ass with its greatness. I can't believe it was written in 1984! When Bret Easton Ellis was coked-out in some New York nightclub bathroom stall, Haruf was out in a cabin writing about crazy ranchers who sever their hands in wheat cutters and run around swinging their bloody limbs at people's faces.
I haven't had the chance to read a detailed biography of Jack London. I have read Martin Eden, which is purported to be at least somewhat autobiographical. If you haven't read it, it is especially interesting for anyone interested in writing or the field in general. Jack London is brilliant and from what I've heard he lived a pretty wild life. It's too bad he didn't get a chance to write more. But, such is the price you pay when you live a lifetime of boozing and spend your final days taking enough morphine to kill a large horse.
