Cole Mannering has a terrible affliction – he can speak with the dead, and it is only getting worse. Before he can begin to understand this growing ability which has only just begun to manifest itself, his parents are brutally slaughtered and his world is torn asunder.

Cole and his older brother, Charles, are forced to join the armies of Genna, sworn enemies of Helfland, and become soldiers under the leadership of the fearful General Talwood. It is a life that Cole abhors. He was never meant to be a warrior. Killing is not in his nature, especially given his unique situation.
But, when the enigmatic wizard of Genna, Forir, learns of Cole’s connection with the dead, he enlists him for a dangerous mission. Cole must journey to the Underworld to retrieve a deadly magical item called the “Blood Scabbard”, which imbues the owner to control fire. Forir wants the item for himself in order to restore order to the countryside, but can he be trusted?

Cole travels to the Underworld where he learns the mysterious source of his power, which unfortunately puts him in the middle of two warring Gods. He also learns that speaking with the dead is only the beginning of his abilities, as they are growing stronger every day. He soon realizes he can command the dead as well.

He is becoming the Master of the Dead, a wizard to be feared.

So nice to see this review on my blog this morning for my novel, "Master of the Hunt" - "Really enjoyed reading the Master of the Hunt, found book via Goodreads list. I liked that the werewolf was left to the last, the story benefited from Harrison focusing on controlling what to him is a curse. The approach to the werewolf nature reminded me a lot of that in Glen Duncan’s “The last werewolf”. I liked Harrison and would like to see him in another book, perhaps following up on that Tennessee link which suggests a possible pack at large in that area. The brain trauma – scar tissue in brain menioned by doctor could have been the result of a silver bullet that failed to kill and caused memory loss. All in all wonderful book with nice hooks that could be used to draw us futher into a possible series. Possbily even a government hunt, as Harrison did ‘nt destroy any of the cameras which were recording the men in the cages and which would surely have captured footage of his fight with the South African."
