I've just updated the little Google site I created for my novel Emily's Ronda Romance.
When I speak to other authors, many wish they could have a little website to showcase their books, or even a website per book. Google Sites is a free way to do that. It works like Blogger, with many of the same controls for formatting, but the templates are different.
I played around with colours, and uploaded a new logo with a transparent background, and a new background image that is a very subtle gradient. I also moved the menu from the side of the page, to above the content. Then, changing the colours and using one of the default menu options (button style), I was able to make the Google Site look fairly professional.
Even though I know how to use HTML, I didn't need any for this site. Everything is WYSIWYG. Best of all, the site is free. At some point I'll probably buy a domain name, and redirect it to the Google Site, but this doesn't seem to be essential for getting the site listed in search engines.
I also uploaded the front cover of my novel, my own profile photo, and some photos to give readers a feel for the part of Spain where the story takes place. I also found the Amazon and Smashwords logos online, and created a simple image for my buy page to give readers a visual clue they'll recognise.
