The devastation of depression is talked about a great deal these days, but Gael Carnes provides us with an intimate portrait of the disease that is both starkly honest and empathetic. The story and characters draw us in until every overcast afternoon, ominous glance and hopeless fear becomes our own. At a time in our culture when genuine empathy and truth both appear to be in short supply, this is an important story.

Secret Burials brings us intimately into Roberta's inner world as she struggles to find her way through intrusive thoughts, images, and depression. This book features a masterful literary style that is rich in setting and character details and yet is highly readable. Roberta's world is not a rom-com romp in Hallmark Land, and that's what makes its close-to-the- nerve authenticity so much more satisfying.
