I read Muriel Spark too long ago to really remember but I remember being impressed by the cool spareness of her tone.
& I loved Two Girls Fat & Thin by Gaitskill, the one with the Ayn Randoid in it. Veronica is abt the esort, right? I'll look into it.
I read Fifth Sacred Thing and just couldn't get through it--liked some ideas, but in the end, just too woo woo. & I was really looking forward and being open minded--so sad.

Hi Caty... Hmm... I'm trying to think of book recc's for you since you so kindly suggested reading material for me!! From one bookworm to another, here are my considered suggestions... Have you read much by Muriel Spark? if not, then maybe you would like "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" or "The Girls of Slender Means"? they are classic and Edna O'Brien's "Country Girls" trilogy is pretty amazing... and "Veronica", by Mary Gaitskill, kicks total butt. Another favorite: "The Fifth Sacred Thing" by Starhawk (yes, a little New-Age-y for your tastes, I know, but give it a try and you might be surprised - there are a lot of great feminist/queer political and sci-fi/fantasy elements to it. very juicy). Also, anything by Neal Postman is worth reading, by my reckoning.
