Terry Perrel Sidney adores Tony Hillerman's books, which are literate mysteries set in New Mexico. I've got Ron Hansen's Desperadoes in my to-read stack. Have you read all of Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, Valerie Sayers, the early books of James Wilcox, short stories by Tim Gautreaux? Although her work isn't included in the parameters you listed, I think you'd like Laurie Colwin. Have you read Edward P. Jones's The Known World? It's an amazing story told in an oral tradition. It's one of my all-time favorites. Like Lonesome Dove, you've got to give it some time and then, bang, you're caught in that world and hate to see the last page come. Did you read that book I brought to your house for you and Elizabeth to read? I'll keep thinking. . .

Tina I need more book recommendations! I like Western setting, Scotland, modern day or historical but not the lusty romance genre in particular (boring normally). Lonesome Dove was wonderful, The Work of Wolves also good, but I also liked Outlander (the whole series) in spite of it's deep and horrible flaws. Oh, the South.
I've robbed what you've got here so far.
Any ideas?
