Ha ha, Mr. Syntax: that's pretty good. I credit Mr. Romond with putting the idea in my head that I might grow up to be a poet. It had never occurred to me before he took us to see Robert Bly, then showed us a poem he'd written about it. My teacher, a poet! Now, that was something new and different. And seeing Bly ... that sealed the deal. It was the 70s; he was still wearing those crazy masks and raging against the machine. I thought: wow, I want to be wild and rage like that ~ I want to be a poet!

Martha, wonderful that you remember and are able to publicly recognize your ninth grade English teacher. I vividly remember my English teacher at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington, Fr. Ronald Herron, S.J. I became a teacher for a while but I wonder if any of my students remember me. All I know is that when I taught American English at the Government Technical Training School as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Northern Nigeria - They called me Mr. Syntax.
