Hi Bill I'll be adding this to my bookshelf list but I think you would especially enjoy "Kalooki Nights" by Howard Jacobson. It's a dark-humor novel about being Jewish in the late 20th century. I've read one book by him already (Act of Love) and he seems especially interested in Jews who color outside the lines. You may need occasional help from someone who knows Yiddish as some words in that language aren't defined or translated.
