Alyson Hagy Alicia--Tough one for me. I don't think of American fiction in regional terms like I once did. I guess that's because I've lived in some many different regions.

But. Faulkner, for sure. Probably Absalom, Absalom. And my list would include story collections by Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Peter Taylor, and Katherine Anne Porter. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. Cane by Jean Toomer, yes. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines (or maybe A Gathering of Old Men). To Kill a Mockingbird. Beloved by Toni Morrison, perhaps?
