One of my all time favorite books is "The Towers of Trebizond" by British author Rose Macaulay published in 1956. The book tells the story of a group of British Anglicans, who, along with a camel, embark for Trebizond, Turkey, to convert the locals. Ironic, hilarious and tragic, the book begins with a great line: "Take my camel, dear," said Aunt Dot, as she climbed down from the animal upon return from High Mass.
