“Never trust a man who doesn’t have a little larceny in him.” Just Released:
A Little Larceny This is a coming of age story ... with a big difference. Move over Holden Caulfield, Sonny Mitchell’s in town. At seventeen, this kid isn’t having an emotional crisis at a fancy private school, he’s scraping the serial numbers off hot watches at his uncle’s booth in a New York City jewelry exchange. Talk about angst!
Sonny just wants to study to become an English professor, but when his uncle has a heart attack, he is called upon by the family to run the booth. Instead of a Phd, he graduates from scraping serial numbers to selling hot watches. But that’s the easy part.
As his uncle is being taken out on a stretcher, he slips Sonny a little packet to hold and hide. The stone it contains is hot enough to end the ice age. It sends Sonny across the world, pursued by thieves, government officials and police.
His travelling companion is a sixteen year old girlfriend, who dresses like a hooker and sounds like a longshoreman.
“Sonny,” his girlfriend tells him, “you ain’t no criminal.”
“My uncles are criminals and I’m working with them. One is a loan shark, another deals in hot watches and the third sells used cars that he never needed to buy. And who the hell knows what my father really does?”
“Those are just their jobs, Sonny. That don’t make them criminals.”
The girlfriend’s a little dangerous, but the diamond can get him killed.
When you read this book, you will learn: 1. How loansharks work 2. Who buys hot watches 3. How to “enhance” crummy diamonds 4. How mechanical watches work (really!) 5. What to do with the world’s hottest diamond. 6. How to talk to a gangster when you’re selling him a watch for his girlfriend. 7. And much more
