I started from Catching Fire, then Mockingjay, then circled back to this origin.

I often find that the sign of a book that I truly love, that becomes a part of my personal canon, is one that I can read again endlessly. I would add The Hunger Games to this list. It is only now that I truly appreciate the complexity of this series, and also the relevance this book currently holds to the current political climate. We see it now in our desensitisation to the violence on the news, the dangers of capitalism, even in the extravagant 2024 Met Gala that had commentators calling it "Hunger Games-esque", and the growing resurgence of authoritarian regimes that were so prevalent less than a century ago (by which this book was inspired by other works such as 1984, which analysed existing authoritarian regimes like Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia).

It is almost shocking to me that I first finished the Hunger Games series over five years ago at the ripe age of eleven. At this age, I regretfully only had one interest when reading this series: the action. And now I feel gawkish for never realising that I too was only invested in the violence in these books, unaware that these books were about the psychological impacts of a cruel regime, rather than about whatever action occurred in the Hunger Games themselves. Maybe I was also desensitised to the idea of violence in books because of my love for fantasy novels, where violence is often so prevalent to an egregious extent.

Back when I first read Mockingjay, I felt a sense of pointlessness to the action and also a sadness that there were not many Peeta and Katniss moments, but this was the point of the novel. It shows us the mental torture Katniss undergoes; she becomes tormented by Peeta's torture and the implications of working as the Mockingjay, morphing from a brave, nameless girl from the Seam to a lost girl forced to be the face of a rebellion. The criticism is harsh towards this novel: many could not believe how much Katniss has changed, and many felt that all the deaths in the book were futile, but this is the harsh truth about war and fighting and violence. It never benefits anyone. It feels so senseless and wasteful, because it is.

Now, I think I finally appreciate the relationship between Katniss and Peeta. Peeta was a love interest I was never particularly interested in, but now I think I truly understand why the two go so well together, even when they don't seem to. Unlike Gale and Katniss, who built a camaraderie on mutual need (Gale, I can forgive for how much he cared for Katniss' family and saving as many lives as he could from District 12, but unforgivably never went back to even say goodbye to Katniss), Peeta and Katniss are forced together by a government they hate and put on public display for the entire country to watch. With the Hunger Games and both of their determination to preserve who they are and their humanity, it is unequivocally true that Katniss truly cares about Peeta by the end of the first book. While Peeta's feelings for Katniss were real, and Katniss likely had a crush on Peeta since the bread incident (keeping track of the fact that he is broad-shouldered and won wrestling competitions), because of the life-or-death situation she was forced into, Katniss' feelings were confused between romantic love, performance, and friendship. But, when away from the cameras, especially in Catching Fire and at the end of Mockingjay, their shared traumatic experience and trust they showed each other in the first novel bring them closer because only they understand what the other went through. For Peeta, no one has ever shown him as much care as Katniss did, whereas his father never stopped his mother from abusing him, even living alone in Victor's Village while his family lived above the bakery. Without Katniss, he would never have survived the 74th Hunger Games. For Katniss, Peeta gave her unconditional compassion that no one ever offered her other than her younger sister, sparking her will to survive after he risks getting beaten to give her bread. Both of them have given the other a sense of hope, acting as a reminder that humanity can be good due to the mutual care they show to each other. They both go out of their way to save the other, to get back to one another (in Mockingjay) when everyone else has abandoned them. ...more "
