“القداسة فعل الجماعة لا الأفراد. فلا يوجد مقدّسٌ في ذاته! لا يوجد مقدّس إلا في مجتمع .. وكلما امتدت جذور الجماعة في التاريخ وانبسطت رقعتها الجغرافية؛ كلما تكثَّفت مشاعر التقديس عندها، وتأكدت لدى أفرادها قداسة هذا المقدس أو ذاك. ومع طول الأمد، لا تصير قداسة هذا المقدس تأملية، مثلما كانت أول الأمر، وإنما تغدو بدهية .. موروثة .. راسخة بثقل ثقافة الجماعة

وما جوهر القداسة إلا إيغال في التبجيل، فهي أقصى درجات الاحترام والإعلاء .. وهي غير الإيمان ! فالإيمان في أساسه ديني، يقوم على الغيب، والعقل عقال له. أما التقديس فأساسه تأملي، يقوم على التحقق من عمق ورفعة المقدس. ومن هنا يقال مثلا أن العمل مقدس والزواج مقدس وهذا البناء أو الحجر مقدس”

And the knights come down on them, faceless men clad in all steel, and the iron thunder of their charge seems to fill the world.
