Justin Cronin
“And how am I to face the odds Of man’s bedevilment and God’s?”
Justin Cronin, The City of Mirrors

James W. Loewen
“Baptist minister and inventor Burrell Cannon (1848–1922) led some Pittsburg investors to establish the Ezekiel Airship Company and build a craft described in the Biblical book of Ezekiel. The ship had large fabric-covered wings powered by an engine that turned four sets of paddles. It was built in a nearby machine shop and was briefly airborne at this site late in 1902, a year before the Wright brothers first flew. Enroute to the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, the airship was destroyed by a storm. A second model crashed and the Rev. Cannon gave up the project.”
James W. Loewen, Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong

Mary Norton
“It's so awful and sad,” she once admitted to Tom Goodenough, “to belong to a race that no sane person believes in.”
Mary Norton, The Borrowers Afield

Carson McCullers
“It was like she was too tense. Or maybe because it was like the store took all her energy and time. Woolworth's wasn't the same as school. When she used to come home from school she felt good and was ready to start working on the music. But now she was always tired. At home she just ate supper and slept and then ate breakfast and went off to the store again. A song she had started in her private notebook two months before was still not finished. And she wanted to stay in the inside room but she didn't know how. It was like the inside room was locked somewhere away from her. A very hard thing to understand.”
Carson McCullers, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
