This book has certainly left me with very prominent life lessons which I am sure I will hold onto for the rest of my liife. First of all, the overall theme of such an autobiography is best described as “the road-worn beauty of individuality, time and wisdom” (Grohl 3), which is so very present in the stories that Grohl tells-especially while he is out on the road touring the world. Dave Grohl, who has been in several bands, has seen and experienced firsthand so much on the road. From traveling in an old run-down van, to eventually performing at the White House, and a million other experiences in between. Dave’s been through it all. Second, the turning point, or crisis, in Dave Grohl’s life is the feeling he describes during his visit with a long time family friend, Tracey, who of which Dave refers to as a cousin despite each other no relation. In his early teens, Dave with his family visit Tracey and her family one summer during the 1980s. Tracey introduces Dave to all sorts of new music and bands, and before he knows it, Dave realizes “something had been awakened in me-I just wasn’t sure yet what that was” (Grohl 53). At this point Dave Grohl’s fate is sealed. The world changes around him, and he never looks back on what he once knew. Also, Dave has a strong desire for success, as seen while he performs some sort of ritual as a teenager, claiming to not “know exactly who I was praying to, but I did know exactly what I was praying for. Success” (Grohl 62). Dave, from an early age, is already set on achieving goals, which I think perfectly characterizes just the sort of person that he is: someone who never gives up, does things their own way and owns every task in the most amazing way possible. Although, the success that he previously prayed for shocks Grohl at certain points in his life. Dave Grohl becomes the drummer of Nirvana in the early 90s, a band that rises to fame and changes the world. Dave at this point, was previously the drummer for the punk rock band Scream, and wonders how to “process going from being one of ‘us’ to one of ‘them’” (Grohl 150). From rebellious and against the norm, to becoming mainstreamed almost totally unwillingly. I could only imagine what that was like for Dave to have to deal with, but clearly he has gotten very used to it. Overall, the style of this book is difficult to describe. It’s obviously an autobiography, and it is one hell of a ride to get to experience through the eyes of Dave Grohl. Grohl describes every story and “each memory” as “another step in the crosswalk” (Grohl 363) in amazing detail, whether it’s humour or heartache. It is simply extraordinary and I would definitely enjoyed every single story and lesson I have learned.
