The place where Montag lives watches big television screens and listens to seashell radios. He has been doing his job for ten years and never wondered why he burnt books until one day when he met two people in his life. He met a 17 year old girl who changed his perspective on the past and a professor who guides him to what he should do with his life.
The author Ray Bradbury uses lots of literary devices and elements to portray the idea he is trying to get across. One of those elements is symbolism. “and then when she seemed hypnotized by the salamander on his arm and the phoenix disc on his chest,”(Bradbury 6). This quote talks about the symbols that represent the firemen because both the phoenix and salamander are symbols of fire. Also he sometimes uses personification to describe things. “ The little mosquito-delicate dancing hum in the air, the electric murmur of a hidden wasp snug in its special pink warm nest,”(Bradbury 12). This is talking about the sound of the empty room and how quiet it was that you could hear the littlest sounds. He describes the sounds as bugs because they make small and quiet sounds like he is hearing.
The author also uses multiple themes to tell the story and make it have a good meaning. One is that the government is hiding information. In this book the government hides information through burning the old books. They put out new information for everyone to see and hear on billboards, radios and on the televisions. “Established, 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the colonies. First fireman: Benjamin Franklin” (Bradbury 34). This was something posted by the government for the people to see and know. Another theme was addiction. The addiction in this story was Montag's wife Mildred and her screen time. Mildred would spend long periods of time watching “The Parlor” that it started to take effect on her brain. She was beginning to forget how and when she and Montag met.
This book was a very interesting book to start with. It was hard to start reading in the beginning but then as I read more and more into the book it was easier to understand. The author's choice of literacy elements adds a lot of contrast to the book and it helps the reader to understand more about what is going on in the moment. At the end of the book the mood changes a lot and it becomes a lot more interesting to read. I would recommend this book to read because it is very interesting and a fun read. ...more "
