“المسلمون اليوم مصعوقون بسبب حالة الأمة، ومتأكدون من إخفاقهم في الالتزام بجانب مركزي من جوانب الوحي، ومن ثم يعللون ضعفهم وتخلفهم عن بقية العالم. كيف وقع شعب قاد العالم ذات يوم في ميادين العلم والتكنولوجيا والقوة العسكرية، وكان أمينا على الوحي الإلهي الأخير، في مثل هذه الحالة المذلة؟ من التعليلات النموذجية هي أن كثيراً من المسلمين مهملون لواجباتهم الدينية وشعائرهم، أو أنهم لم ينجحوا في تطبيق الشريعة الإسلامية، أو أنهم ضالون عن جادة السنة النبوية، أو أنهم محكومون من دكتاتوريين طغاة. أنا لا أستبعد هذه الاحتمالات، ولكني أعتقد أن صميم المشكلة هو رفض إعادة تقويم التراث الهائل من العلم والعادات التي وصلت إلينا من أسلافنا، تقويماً نقديا. أشعر أن المسلمين قد شلّوا أنفسهم فكريا بجعل الكم الهائل من الفكر الذي ورثوه نوعاً من المعلبات الفكرية (المحفوظات الفكرية)، حرَماً مقدسّاً حُجبت فيه الحقائق المزعجة ولا يجوز الاقتراب منه، وأشعر أن الأزمة الكبرى التي تحل بالمسلمين اليوم هي أزمة فكر، أزمة رفض التفكير النقدي فيما يطلبه الإسلام حقا.”
