" I have such a love-hate relationship with this book. When I was reading it, there were times, more often than not, when I wanted to chuck this book at the wall and scream. When I was reading it, there were times, more often than not, when I wanted to chuck this book at the wall and scream. The characters in part one are frustrating as hell, not to mention morally deplorable. Catherine and Heathcliff come from the very pits of the darkest parts of hell, I am sure of it. Catherine said they were made of the same materials, paraphrasing, that they were cut from the same fabric. They were. I believe that. The truth is that they are such horrible people, and so similar, that their relationship serves little purpose but to destroy one another. Their love is doomed the moment Mr. Earnshaw dies.

But I do believe that they love one another. At least, I believe that Catherine is the only person Heathcliff has loved more than himself. And he does. He is honest and even selfless when it comes to Catherine. The scene where he sneaks into Thrushcross Grange to see her when she is dying and Edgar comes is evidence of that. He only cares for what is best for Catherine. That is his only redeeming quality.

Catherine is a childish brat. I am ashamed to share a first name with her. But I love her "Nelly, I am Heathcliff!" monologue.

As for the second part, most of that was miserable as well. Heathcliff loses the iota of humanity he once had the moment Catherine dies, and his obsession with revenge makes him the worst protagonist I have ever had the displeasure of reading about. But Young Catherine and Hareton give readers of Wuthering Heights hope for humanity. They hate one another at first, and Young Catherine is at first disturbingly prejudice against her cousin. But they grow to love one another honestly and purely. Their relationship is much, much healthier than Catherine and Heathcliff's. I was actually fangirling about it as I read. It's so adorable that Hareton wants to learn to read to impress Cathy; it is evident that she makes him want to be a better person, and different from Heathcliff, his father figure. And he makes her less prejudice. They are overwhelmingly good for one another, and theirs is a relationship that I could root for.

I loved the p various depictions of love in this novel. There was the conventional and dysfunctional, Catherine and Heathcliff, the unrequited, Catherine and Edgar, and Isabella and Heathcliff. But there were also familial relationships. Nelly and Young Catherine, Nelly and Hareton, Young Catherine and Edgar, Heathcliff and Hareton. These relationships were very powerful to me, and it was interesting that Emily Bronte chose to depict these relationships as she did. ...more "
