Talking passionately about art was a surefire way to make everyone in the room feel uncomfortable, and he’d ruined more cocktail parties that way than he could count on his fingers.

I have no idea why talking passionately about art would ruin cocktail parties. In fact, it would probably make parties a little less boring.
