"This is my fave BBC miniseries, but it is my first time reading it. John Thornton is such a complicated character, and the benefit of his thoughts makes his actions that much more meaningful. He isn't perfect, but he is surprisingly tender at times. I don't think you realize in the miniseries that Margaret Hale is only supposed to be 19, & her immaturity and inexperience really come through on-page. I'm loving this!" — Jul 15, 2026 01:42PM

“I may be at my worst, but I can masquerade as someone who’s doing perfectly fucking fine.”

“Mo chuisle? It means ‘my pulse.’ I never quite understood it before, what it meant to have another person be the d-driving force behind the pump of your blood, but it’s true. Lark, your smile saved me like an emergency transfusion. Your laugh is the song my every blood cell dances to. Your touch revived me from darkness. You are my pulse. You make me feel alive even when I’m surrounded by death.”

“I’m afraid of the unpredictability of existing. I’m afraid of not being able to control the direction of my life. I’m afraid that no matter how much I plan, I won’t be able to avoid hurtful and sad things. But above all…” I take a deep breath and laugh softly, because what I’m about to say is ridiculous, even if it’s true. Even if it’s me. “Mostly, I’m afraid of attempting something and not being perfect at it.”

“You don’t need to pretend. I want to share in your happiness and in your sorrow.”

“She updated her Goodreads page religiously, not to leave reviews but just to ensure that she had some kind of record of every book she’d ever read.”
