This book!!!!! Remains one of my favourite romances and generally one of my favourite books of all time. As the second instalment in the ACOTAR series, Sarah J Maas takes the events of book one and fully flips them on their head, and builds a whole new story that I adore each time I read it.

From the very start of the book, we have a very different feel and atmosphere from the first one. Feyre is dealing with trauma and PTSD, something I'm really glad was represented in this book. She's dealing with a toxic and abusive relationship, and we watch her as she finds herself again and pieces herself back together throughout the course of the book. I thought the trauma that Feyre went through and the consequences of that was incredibly upsetting to read about, but I thought it was handled really well here. She didn't have some magical overnight fix for her issues and we got to see the whole process of her trying to fix herself, a character arc I really loved reading. The same for Rhysand's character. He is also faced with so much trauma that he keeps hidden away from his family, and the bond he has with Feyre in sharing that experience is also something I loved. It was refreshing to not see a traumatised woman find a man who magically fixes her and makes her feel better, but instead see both parties of the relationship face their demons together and work through it together.

Of course the main focus of this book is the romance between Rhys and Feyre, aka one of my absolute all-time favourites. I think their relationship worked for me from the very first book, because I'm such a sucker for the constant teasing and back and forth they have between them. Rhys is an absolute treasure, and I know full well that everything he does is the bare minimum but to be honest, even finding the bare minimum for male characters in a lot of books is asking a lot, so the bar might be low, but I'm still more than happy to say he's one of my favourite male characters ever. Especially in comparison to Tamlin (who side note, I can't even talk about with feeling immense rage anymore), his efforts to allow Feyre to be her own person and make her own decisions is again the bare minimum but surprisingly refreshing to read, because it doesn't happen as often as it should in a lot of books. Their back and forth and flirting is so much fun to read, and I love the development of their relationship throughout the course of the book. The way they're able to make one another a better person just makes my little heart flutter.

Another big part of what I love about this book is the found family trope used. The family dynamic of Rhys' inner circle is so good, and each of the characters serves a purpose and a role, and so nobody feels unnecessary and if one was missing, it wouldn't work. Mor is an absolute favourite, and learning about her back story breaks my heart every time. She's such a strong character and I'd love to know even more about her in future instalments, beyond what we also find out in book three. Cassian and Azriel are also great, and again share a dynamic that I love to read. The brotherly bond between them and Rhys is so lovely to read, and when you find out more about their history, you can fully appreciate the extent of their relationship. Amren is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting characters in the whole series. Her mysterious background as an ancient entity is super interesting, and I loved getting to see her use her power at the end of this book. Her personality is great, and I love that we can see the cracks in her hard-shelled personality as she develops a friendship with Feyre.

I also actually really enjoy the plot of this book. I think it does a great job of setting up the main events that will occur in book three, and does a good job of introducing new enemies and showing the history surrounding the upcoming war. It was also really interesting and fun to see Feyre learning about her powers, and exploring each of them in different ways throughout the book. The end 15% or so of the book is so incredibly action-packed and chaotic, and again did a great job of setting up for book three. The way the book ends absolutely ruined me the first time I read it, and still managed to stir some tears up in me the second time around.

Overall, this book is for me the perfect slow-burn fantasy romance, with an interesting plot to back it up. I think it'll forever remain a staple on my favourites shelf, and I'll be coming back to it for many years to come. ...more "
