Deon Van Der Merwe

“It was wrong to be so joyless, so desponding; I should have made God my friend, and to do His will the pleasure and the business of my life; but faith was weak, and passion was too strong.”
― Anne Brontë

“But the other piece of this puzzle has to do with the confusion that inevitably arises when the Christian faith becomes too closely related to a cultural or national identity. For many Germans, their national identity had become so melted together with whatever Lutheran Christian faith they had that it was impossible to see either clearly. After four hundred years of taking for granted that all Germans were Lutheran Christians, no one really knew what Christianity was anymore.”
― Eric Metaxas, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

“We seek to escape the dark cave of a despondent mind by either dulling oneself mentally or through imaginative acts. One form of escapism is daydreaming.”
― Kilroy J. Oldster, Dead Toad Scrolls

“His opposition to self-indulgent emotionalism and “phraseology” was the same as ever; his opposition to the National Socialists and all they represented was the same as ever.”
― Eric Metaxas, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy
