“Ajattarot (ajattaret) ovat suomalaisessa kansanperinteessä esiintyneitä pahoja, naispuolisia uskomusolentoja. Metsässä elelevät ajattarot pelottelivat ja johtivat metsästäjiä ja muita kulkijoita harhaan samaan tapaan kuin hattarat. Tyypillisesti ajattaro asettui metsässä nukkujan rinnalle ja aiheutti painajaisia. Suomenkielisessä kirjallisuudessa ajattarot mainitaan ensimmäisen kerran vuoden 1776 Raamatussa: "Ja ei millään muotoa enää uhriansa uhraamaan ajattaroille, joiden kanssa he huorin tehneet ovat" (3. Moos. 17:7). Myöhemmissä suomennoksissa ajattarot on korvattu metsänpeikoilla ja aavikon paholaisilla.”
