Ali smiled. “This is nice.” “It is nice,” her Dad repeated. “Mom would have loved having you over,” Ali said to me. “She loved when we took seconds,” Ali’s dad said. “Yes, she did!” Ali agreed. I watched for Ali’s reaction to the comments about her mom. She appeared to be okay for the moment. Maybe my sudden arrival at her bedroom door really had helped her to open up. It was so good to see her smiling face again. And perhaps I could encourage her to share more happy stories about her mother. That might even bring me closer to both her and her dad. If that helped them to feel better about staying, then I would be overjoyed.”
