The world first of all was extremely detailed and had so much lore behind it that it was crazy! But the author didn't make it hard for you to understand it and explained it in a way even a novice in fantasy could understand. Even the magic system which could be daunting at first to get but soon it becomes quite easy and just fascinating to learn more about the magic system in this world. The city and the surrounding landscapes were dreary seeing as all places in this kingdom were covered with ash from the occasional ash falls that plague the lands. You would think that would make the world boring but it actually adds more depth to it making you wonder why these ash falls happen and why they plague this kingdom in the first place.

The magic system is wonderful and fleshed out, explaining how all the metals work together to create another branch of magic and the different ways they can be used to the user's benefit. I can safely say that I have never seen a magic system like this in any other books I have read before. That is extremely promising and I hope that this inspires more creative forms of magic to be written about in future fantasy novels. I could picture the way this magic looked while I was reading and visualized the characters performing this magic in certain scenes.

The characters were wonderful! I found myself falling in love with each of these characters and the depth that they were given to their personalities. Vin was the most interesting and one of my favorite female leads I have read about in a book! To see her go from a young mistrusting street urchin to a trained Mistborn assassin who would fight for the gang that she grew to love and care about. It was also nice to see a woman be interested in typical feminine outfits and things but still retain the strong and determined tom boyish side of who she is. That's very refreshing to see a female character not have to change who she is completely during her story.

Other characters I loved was Sazed, who was a loveable mentor/bodyguard to Vin and became a close and reliable friend to Vin almost like a surrogate older brother figure to her. Kelsier was so layered and though some actions he did were not the best you could on some level understand why he did the things he did. He was flawed but when it came to Vin he cared for her very much like a surrogate daughter and just wanted the best for this young girl that he grew to care about. The crew were each interesting in their own ways and I hope that we get to see more of them in the other two books in the trilogy.

The politics and the way this world was built was great too, the Lord Ruler who the twist at the end to his identity was mind blowing. The Lord Ruler was like a good in this universe with his Inquistors being his first line of defense. The Inquistors are special individuals chosen by him to protect and serve his every move, even going so far to put spikes of metal inside of their heads and bodies making them look eerie and monstruous. Skaa in this world are the slaves and sold out to the nobility or high ranking families to work for them under sometimes very harsh conditions. These people were so beaten down that even the thought of rebellion couldn't raise spirits or spark hope for them.

I just devoured this book and I honestly can't wait to read the other two in this trilogy! I also can't wait to read the entire Cosmere to explore more of this amazing and wonderful world that Brandon Sanderson has crafted for us! ...more "
