Jayson Boy, the new challenge page and setup really does stink! You can't see your friends' challenges, not even on their profile pages, and there's no way to directly view and respond to comments 🙄

message 3: by Maja (new)

Maja Agreed! It sucks! I love to see what other people set their challenge to

message 4: by Bill (new)

Bill It's very poor. Looks like it was set up by a child.

Jayson Maja wrote: "Agreed! It sucks! I love to see what other people set their challenge to"

Yup, and also to wish them luck when they start or congratulate them when they finish.

Presuming this new setup is intentional and they're not going to fix it, the only way to see friends' challenges is to constantly monitor the feed and hope you catch it by chance. Of course, the feed's not really been feeding much over the past few months. 🫤

Jayson Bill wrote: "It's very poor. Looks like it was set up by a child."

Yeah, this is the continuing gamification of Goodreads. It's all made to look good on the app, which is its own disaster, and make features as singular and simplistic as possible. The trade-off for losing all the previous functions is we get sub-challenges for collecting badges, which is a trade-off I think nearly everyone would pass on. 😒

message 7: by Maja (new)

Maja Oh this is definitely intentional. And the achievements is so much like the ones on kindle.

They have such a backwards perspective. Instead of promoting socialization on this social media site, they promote personal "achievements." 🙄

This site was at its peak pre-pandemic. If they just kept things the way they were in 2019, nobody would be complaining.

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan I do not like this new format at all :( It completely removed the sense of community. I can see why everyone is going to Fables.

message 10: by Jayson (new)

Jayson Susan wrote: "I do not like this new format at all :( It completely removed the sense of community. I can see why everyone is going to Fables."

Yeah, I'd be over at one of the alternatives myself if not for the fact that all my book friends are here. I'm not the sort of person who can juggle more than one social media platform at once, or at least give it regular attention. So, I'm putting up with things for the meantime.

Hopefully, GR will recognize the universal negative reaction and not dig in their heels and gaslight us like they always do. 😐

message 11: by Edgarr Alien (new)

Edgarr Alien Pooh I agree. This change sucks!! This is a SOCIAL platform and they are removing parts of it

Jayson Edgarr Alien wrote: "I agree. This change sucks!! This is a SOCIAL platform and they are removing parts of it"

Yup, if I only wanted a way to personally track the books I read, I could just use notebook and pen, take up scrapbooking, or start a Bookstagram.

Lol Thanks so much, Vikas! I appreciate the confidence. Though, one of my New Year's resolutions is to read fewer, longer books, so I don't quite know if 300 is in the cards again. But, you never know. 😅

Happy New Year to you too and happy reading 🥳👍

message 17: by Vikas (new)

Vikas Read what you love and if that's longer books then go for it but I know our first love is comics because that's where we started reading so we are forever going to continue reading them. But yeah read some normal books as well. Do let me know if you need any recommendations or soemthing.

Well, it'll certainly be more trades and less single issues. That's a lot of reviews to write! But, yes, getting more prose books in my reading diet is also on the agenda. In any case, I'll be sure to hit you up if I'm ever in need of recommendations, comics or otherwise 😁👍

Anna Avian I hate the new format of the challenge!
But have a joyful new year and happy reading Jayson!

message 24: by Juho (new)

Juho Pohjalainen I'm not even going to bother with this new format. I have nothing to prove to anyone anyway.

Judging by the GR Help section, nobody's a fan of it. This is part of a reply from GR Support:
"The new reading challenges experience was created using feedback from our community and we're always looking to improve."
Indeed, now watch them as they turn a blind eye to feedback from a community that universally hates it. Makes you wonder who it is in the "community" they listen to and why. 🤔

In any case, much thanks for the kind words, Anna! Hope you have great year as well. Happy reading 🥳👍

MrGlassWontBreak Congrats, I was honestly expecting you to have read way more based on how active you are. I managed to read up to 300 books(about 40k pages) this year too. Low key can’t believe that

Congratulations to you too, 40,000 pages is quite an achievement!

I had been hoping to average a book a day but I decided to read a 900-page book that pretty much monopolized my September and October... there's always next year 😅

message 43: by Juho (new)

Juho Pohjalainen I read a lot fewer books this year than expected. Didn't have the challenge open so I could only take an educated guess, and I highballed it by quite a bit.

But then, like I said way back in January, I have nothing left to prove to anyone.

Well, you could always just batch assign your 2025 books to a shelf and it'll do the counting for you. Either that or set your Read shelf to only display a certain number per page and so you'd only need to count the remainder. No educated guesswork needed.
