“What do you think of the windows?" The cleric's questioned stopped her for a second time.
"The windows? They're—" Eva let her gaze rise to the stained-glass windows, their colors just beginning to show in the feeble morning light. It would be nice to see them when sunlight streamed through, making the colors truly vibrant, but she'd be gone long before then. Still, even now, she could appreciate their workmanship. "They're beautiful."
"They're broken."
"What?" Eva looked again, harder this time, straining her eyes through the dim light to find a crack or missing piece, but couldn't see what the man was talking about. They appeared perfect to her. Perhaps his sigh was going along with his hair.
"Every piece of the glass that makes up those windows is broken. Some are crushed. All of them are ruined."
"But they're—"
"Beautiful? Aye, 'tis as you say. But only because the creator took those broken pieces and made them into something beautiful. That's what the creator does."
Eva shook her head. Though she appreciated the man's comparison, it wasn't the same. "I'm not a window."
"No, child. You're far more valuable.”
