The skilled use of dissociative deliriants to further bewilder the victims can exponentially compound the difficulties of sorting "facts" from "fantasies" here, to say nothing of the physical / emotional trauma bases, interpolations of adaptive imagination and dreams, on and on... Further, the extrication of any authentic vital remnants of original human potentials toward genuine cathartic liberation and healing endeavors will require an entirely new paradigm of holistic therapeutics, in many cases also incorporating deep psychological transformation techniques that are the benevolent equivalents of the abusive tactics, a sort of reverse-engineering psycho-technology. In the present context, the only "healing" possible is adjustment to the very same sickening reality that creates these horrors in my view, if viewed systemically, "ecologically" in a broad sense. Note the case of David Pelzer, a horribly abused person now "well adjusted" to and a mouthpiece for the most evil world destroying system ever conceived by the hubris of man, a species now well on its way to near term extinction and the destruction of all higher life.. He is only one victim useful pawn amongst so many others of course, not to single this brave resilient man out here..
Further yet still, We are all inheritors of trauma on epigenetic levels as well, collectively. In this grim light, ritualized trauma practices could be understood as distortions and misapplications of what were formerly collective ADAPTATIONS to primal trauma, violent ritualized methods of catharsis and release, and tests of endurance, etc. Viewed in the vast perspective of our entire history / evolutionary prehistory, illuminated with transdisciplinary insights into Catastrophism, depth psychology, "mytho-history" etc., these horrors indeed have an internal logic that despite the clandestine nature of extremist activities connects in uninterrupted undercurrents of what passes for "normal", suppressed and relegated to the shadows, unspeakable and outside the boundaries of "acceptable" discourse, a collective Shadow (in the Jungian sense here) that must be reintegrated to be truly transformed..
