Finshed - well worth the effort, although effort it was. I liked Yu-Lan's description of how neo-confucianism brought together elements of neo-Taoism and Chan'ism. Modern philosophy, however, is only given a passing glance, which is a shame.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. As I read it, I am drawn to comparing the Chinese 'schools of thought' with Western trends in philosophy and thereby questioning my own understanding of both. For example when covering the 'School of Names' and 'that which lies beyond shapes and features', I was reminded of McDowell's 'Mind and World' and what to make of any 'gap' between word and object, if any.

A fascinating glimpse of the makings of a philosopher made poignant by his subsequent fall from grace

Really well written and funny, in a dry way. The book that is, not the whiskey!
