I've seen the reviews and my expectations are low. But this was a pre-order and I have to give Kiersten White one last chance before I write off the Conquerer's Saga as a fluke.

3 husbands in and all caught up for book club tonight! I'm enjoying this. Obviously it's popular for a reason.

The constant temptation to binge this in an afternoon is battling with how much I love it and want to drag it out.

DNF. This is just boring. As per usual, I don't like the "I'm smarter than the police and can solve this all by myself" trope. And as others have pointed out, it's kinda stupid to have this book be titled The Maidens and have it not actually be about them. Finally, the namedropping of psyc figures/terms and references to classics just feels pretentious.

Ah I don't want to wait for book club, I just wanna finish. I don't like dragging this out so much.

I gave this book more than enough time to grab me. Chloe Gong writes well but this plot/pacing is a hot mess. It's a Romeo and Juliet retelling in 1920s Shanghai w/ communists, French, British, and rival gangs, with monsters that may be scientifically engineered to produce a suicide-inducing plague! And yet I don't know how we've filled 126 pages because NOTHING HAS HAPPENED.

Goal will be to finish this tomorrow! I liked it at first but I think it's starting to drag from unnecessary filler. Looking like 3/3.5.

Lua is one of the most toxic characters I've read this year. Holy shit get this person out of here.

Not every essay is perfect but man I love how John Green writes and thinks. This will likely be a slow read so I can savor it, even though I want to binge it all ASAP.

This will be a hybrid audio/HC read. I'm intrigued so far! Hated Romeo and Juliet so hopefully this is a step up.

Was planning to read 50 pages and DNF but I'm actually intrigued! I bought this as soon as it came out cause of my love for We Are the Ants and was never excited for it but it looks like Hutchinson's writing has held up!
