This should be a must read for every property owner & concerned citizen - like ‘Silent Spring’ with more science & spirituality (& deep respect for earth)

Poverty, trauma, and mental illness - the inherent racist & colonial nature of Western society & indigenous issues are examined through this collection of highly personal essays. A must read.

Am rereading this because something is ‘stuck’ either the words or the story don’t line up w my review & impressions of this novel

Many reviewers state issues with stilted dialogue & clumsy handling of secondary plot; I have to agree

Skimmed it, still have to read in detail. Recipes look delicious & authentic (w/ brief notes of food & cultural history). Photographs are gorgeous.

Am re-reading this collection of stories following reading the new 'Shirley' novel : Jackson fans will not be disappointed & the more you know about her life the more engaging her stories will be

F’g brilliant for a lover of Shirley Jackson & gift those who truly know her work on biography.

Omg wAaaay better than Food Heroes - much more in line with hisBBC series Long Weekends& focus on flavourful, simple dishes with ingredients easier to obtain than his Food Heroes.

Ok-ish; not as good as Stein’s long weekends simply because the dishes are an extra level of complexity in terms of preparation or ingredients... desserts seem straightforward though

Slow,detailed read but gives great insight into the challenges two ex pats faced in seeking 'the simple life'.

The name dropping others talk about sets the stage for Patience Grey’s departure from upperclass British norms & into intellectual life & finally a bohemia of sorts.
The people around Grey are mentioned as a means of conveying her personality & responses to the events around her. Grey remains a secretive person, with little known about who she really is except through her letters, her work, and those in her life.

More readable than I initially thought; connections & indepth explanations of things mentioned in passing in 'out of old Ontario kitchens'

Amazing rich, complex & dare I say, ‘meaty’ book about the food & people of Bombay. Grab a seat in an Irani cafe, a cup of chai & sit down & page through history.

Not tons of photos, but those that are there show classic Greek scenery.

Am paging through & recipes are bang on; this is the Anna Del Cona or Julia Child of Greek cooking - simple, flavourful cuisine.
