Not them talking about the girl as if she isn’t there. Part of me wants to believe the Turpins don’t realize it’s Mary Grace they’re talking about but I doubt it.

Mrs Turpin’s mindset about the poor is highly steeped in her own bias. The reason they don’t accept her help is probably because she views them as dirty and lazy regardless of whatever help they’re given, therefore they don’t want HER help. #SupremeClassist

I find it interesting that the two people who don’t laugh are the poor racist white woman and the college student. However, I do believe that they aren’t laughing for two different reasons. The white woman is appalled by the thought and the girl is downright offended and disgusted with their mindset.

“There’s a heap of things worse than a n***[…]It’s all kinds of them just like it’s all kinds of us.” That’s the most appropriate/normal things Mrs Turpin has said this whole story so far. Shows she’s more classist than racist.

I like the contrast in mentality and personality O’Connor creates between Mrs Turpin and the “pleasant lady” vs the “white-trash woman.” It also works as a critique of all of these women and their classist/racist mindsets

I can understand why the elderly folks want the child to move, but the real question is where’s that child’s mamma or daddy

So from what I gather, Claire is the white passing woman and Irene is her childhood friend who, though light skinned, decided to remain amongst the black community. Interesting. I am very intrigued by their inability to communicate openly with each other but this is set in the Jim Crow era so that also makes sense.

At first I wasn’t sure what to make of Cora, but having gotten a little farther I actually really like her character. She is a kind hearted Christian woman that acts as a foil to Addie—in the sense of family living—and is the underlying voice of reason in the story.

Jewel’s relationship with his horse is interesting. I’m also curious about his feelings towards his mother. He seems very adamant that she won’t die while they’re gone, but I can’t tell if it’s from a place of emotional distance or disbelief via grief.

I’m intrigued by Darl’s character and the fact that we start the story with his perspective.
