Old white American men are always the ones to protest they are the most marginalized and oppressed group, all the while pretending they themselves are part of a minority they don't belong to (asiaboos if you will).
I'm sorry but eating only asian food everyday and learning a different language doesn't make you any less white and privileged.
Also this book is making me feel so uncomfortable for the main character...
